On many cars, when it is placed into Drive, the doors lock. I noticed that this does not happen with my 330xi. Is this a setting somewhere or is the design to have the driver lock the doors with the door lock button?

Usually it's a dealer programmed feature based on what the owner wants. My stealership wanted $80 to turn the auto-lock feature on. Some of them won't charge anything, as it takes about 5 minutes to do. When you buy the car new you get an option sheet as to what you want activated and it doesn't cost extra at that point, but if you wait they want to charge you.

I have a 06 330xi and you can program the auto lock feature via the stalk on the left hand column. Roll the middle until you see the "lock" sign, push in the stalk and look for the symbol that displays what you want to do. Much easier if you refer to manual so you know exactly what you are looking for. Why would one go to dealer when you can program yourself just like seat memory, daytime running lamps, etc

depending on wht u have in ur vehicle..

if you have the i-drive...you can actually reprogram everything

if you do not have an i-drive you need to make sure your dealership programs it for you..some dealerships will do a courtesy program but will charge you every time after so remember to not mess up the configs

It's my understanding that on vehicles made after 9/05 ALL programs can be set via the stalk on the left hand column.

Roll the middle until, push in the stalk and look for the symbol that displays what you want to do

IS THIS NOT THE CASE?

You do not need dealer to do these changes for non Idrive vehicles post Sept 05 production. My car was mfg in October and I can do all that I prev posted.

I did not find much in the manual about setting the doors to lock when I go into drive. I experimented with the "stalk" settings and found the key with a check mark. The only setting I could see that related to door locks was the driver door or all four doors on the first open door click with the remote.

Does anyone have more specific instructions on how to set the doors to lock when in drive?

I can't recall off hand but it is in there. My doors lock when I drive off after 10mph or so. I've done it so I know it is there.

Found the setting on page 22 of the 330xi Owern's Manual.
On the stalk, use the toggle to get to a Key with a Check Mark in it
Then use the button to get it to a lock with an A in the corner. Once there you can set the door locks to go autolock as soon as in drive or to delay until you've driven for a very short time. My 330 now locks after I've driven up to around 10mph.

Yes, but don't you have to press the unlock button TWICE to open the door now?

Why is that?

There is another setting for that. When you find the same key with the check in it, you'll see a door...after you click on the door, you'll see two settings...one is four doors with three shut and one open. The other is four doors all open position. If you select the all four door open icon, then one click opens all four doors in one click. It's your choice. For security reasons, I like to have only the driver door open with the first click. That way if I get out to fill the gas tank or whatever, only the driver door is open. Same is true if I am anywhere else where I open the door...it only lets me in unless I click twice.
