I've have my 330xi for a few weeks and now have about 600 miles on it. On my drive back from an appointment...a highway trip....the oil low indicator illuminated. Checking the message I was "told" that the oil level was down 1qt. So I used SOS and they put me in touch with the dealer service dept who advised to add 1 quart of the appropriate synthetic. Which I did.

After driving a short distance on the hwy the warning light appeared again. This time "telling" me my level was even lower than before. After calling via SOS again, I was told the oil sensor is in need of being replaced as it is defective.

It's in the dealer today for the change and to drain all the oil and bring it to the proper level.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? It sounds like they deal with this all the time...or is fairly common?

I have not...I've had my 330xi for 2.5 months with no problems. I hate how there is no dipstick though....some things should remain despite advances in technology.

We had a student at the local BMW CCA's Winter Driving School who had a brand new E90 330. During the tech inspection, there were no less than six instructors looking under the hood for the dipstick. She'd left her manual at home (we advise students to empty out the car before the school) so we couldn't look it up. We all suspected there's an electronic sensor, but none of us wanted to believe BMW would stoop this low.....

Another reason to keep the "old" E36 and E46s - I can't imagine what kind of problems these newer BMWs will be having once the warranty is up.
