Well the check engine light came on during my commute to work this morning. Is there anything I can do before taking it into the dealer? My last few experiences with them have been less than favorable when it comes to my satisfaction and quality of work performed. I do not want to elaborate on these cases as it may be that I am simply overreacting or that I expect too much. On my buddy’s Acura, he used a jumper and cross references the audio beeps on his repair manual and comes up with a diagnosis. Any ideas?

No 7 series here, but I'd find an independent shop and have them do a readout before, if at all, taking it to the dealership. Then you can at least know what you should expect.

Thanks bud. I was also wondering if i can ask the dealership for a diagnosis and pay for that before making a committment to them on haveing a repair done, whatever it may be.
Go to AutoZone and they will run the codes for you free of charge. They may or may not tell you what they mean, but you can look them up online.
I just did this two weeks ago with my new 7. It pulled two codes, including an oxygen sensor and cam sensor fault. I reset the light by disconnecting the battery. 400 miles and 2 weeks later, the light is still off...

Hey,
Fellow canadian. There are no autozones over here lol. so good luck finding one. Take it to a indep bmw mechanic to have the codes read.
