I'm gonna look at an 840ci today and I want to know if it has M60 or M62, is there a way to tell, a digit in the VIN maybe?

Well according to this http://www.8coupe.com/chassis.htm

The VIN range is different CC31xxx for M62, CC89xxx or CC90xxx for M60

And the M62 will have a Steptronic 5 speed auto.

Kind of off topic, but my '96 has the M62 and the steptronic trans. but the book that came with it has specs for the M60. It is the original book because it has dealer stamps in it from 1996 -- when the original owner bought the car. I just found it odd, thats all.

Terry Y,

Thanks a lot for the help, unfortunately It was an M60. Still a very good car, although it lacks power in lower RPM ranges, VANOS issues maybe.

No vanos in any of the 8 models.

Differential change is in order for any 840. Wakes them right up.
