View Full Version : Ethanol deadline stands
sushipower 02-02-2006, 03:38 PM anyone read the pbn?
it says april 2 is the dealine to blend ethanol into hawaii's gasoline.
anyone know the effect it will have on cars?
MauiM3Mania 02-02-2006, 03:41 PM anyone know the effect it will have on cars?
I imagine it's going to effect our pocket books more than our cars. :cool
mauka 02-02-2006, 03:52 PM If it's a similar formula to the one they've been using in California, it will affect many of our cars. Tech guys from Dinan, Turner, etc.. always ask if you're calling from Cali if you have detonation issues with their software. Engines with aftermarket chips, software won't be able to maximize the remap because 91 octane with ethanol won't burn like the 91 in other, less Green, states. At that point, they usually recommend 93 octane or higher.

:( ...where do we get 93 octane here on Oahu?
808Cardinal87 02-02-2006, 06:05 PM Damn people from CA moving over here and messing up the way things are run....
I say let's switch back to leaded gas and screw the environment!!! :alright
Gordon L 02-02-2006, 06:09 PM Ethanol is actually an octane enhancer and according to what I've read the ethanol in E10 adds 2 to 3 points of octane to gasoline(.2 to .3). A downside is that ethanol has only approximately 80,000 BTU/gallon compared to gasoline with about 125,000 BTU/gallon. The reduction of BTUs can potentially reduce gas mileage by up to 3%.
CobaltFire 02-02-2006, 11:18 PM I was also under the impression that ethanol had a much higher octane (something like 110 for pure ethanol), but lower energy density. Maybe I am wrong though.
K Funk 02-03-2006, 12:38 AM uhhhh, so does it mean anything bad for my carbed 2002?
I'm guessing I'll have to atleast play with my ignition timing a little....

sweet, I may have to stop by there. :cool
by the way, I happen to know where there are 2 parts cars... both squaretail. Will probably cruise by Monday to pick apart the little stuff I need: speedo, backseat, console, interior doo-dads...
rennwerkes 02-04-2006, 01:50 AM Actually, if I'm not mistaken, all the guys that said they could get the ethanol production locally up and running by this time haven't even come close. Typical. These guys come in promising the world, get the Leg to pass the law and then can't come through. Just like when folks said how can the State be spending so much money building portable classrooms. Companies said they could do it for $40k. State let them come in, look at the spec's and submit their bid, the guys weren't even close.:mad
Hate these guys that are all talk!
Beastie, weren't you with the DOE when some of this stuff was happening???
By the way, I don't think there'll be ethanol in local gas for some time.
The Beastmaster 02-04-2006, 01:53 AM I was around at the start of that, then I left. $40k for a portable??? :biglaughb More like $120k per.
rennwerkes 02-04-2006, 01:58 AM Beastie, exactly, but I think there it got down to about $90k at the lowest. Have to admit that some of the contractors were taking the State for a ride.:nono
The Beastmaster 02-04-2006, 02:08 AM That's the game. Underbid, then have change orders.
IslandS62 02-16-2006, 08:02 PM This development have any effect on above?

rennwerkes 02-16-2006, 08:39 PM This really fricken depresses me!:mad
While Hawaii is starting to implement ethanol, the other states have decided it's a bad idea and are getting out of it! GREAT!!!

Lingle?
rennwerkes 02-16-2006, 09:22 PM Nope, as much as I hate to admit it, this one started with the Democrats in the Leg. Wouldn't have hurt to have done some homework. At least you don't see me making excuses for the stupid things the Democrats do.
The Beastmaster 02-16-2006, 09:30 PM You should run for public office. I'll talk to Lan and see if we can use Romantei as rennwerkes HQ. :redspot
rennwerkes 02-16-2006, 09:41 PM COOL!!!:D
We'd generate so much campaign funding from coorporate sponsors!:alright
I can just see the girls sitting on the exec's laps saying "Puhleese, contribute $1,000 to the campaign, pluhleese!":eyecrazy
What was my incentive to win again???
