If you don't know what it is, don't even think about trying it yourself...

there's some great diy's on autogeek and other similar sites. check'em out. you'll need about 2 hours to get an idea of things. read several articles. also, check out the diy at the top of this forum.

I wouldn't go for it...it's pretty tough to do well for a beginner

if you dont go lower than 2000 grit it wont hurt a bit. 2000 grit wont even remove most of the orange peel. Very easy prosess itself. The fun comes in later when the paint gets buffed and polished.

I advice getting an old VW fender or door or whatever is cheap/ free and trying to practice on it first to see what works and how

I suggest you try on something you don't care about. Go to local junkyard and pick up a fender to practice on. (preferrably off a german made car)

I suggest dividing the fender in half w/ tape. Go to town on one section with your best combo of compound/polish/wax then try wet sanding + compound/polish/wax on the other half.

That will give a good comparison of the value of wetsanding, and hopefully give you a better insight into whether or not you want to go to town on your own ride.

Something to keep in mind, German cars use a "softer" clearcoat then comparable american/japanese cars... so its an even more sensitive process on your bimmmer.
