Any body out there retrofitting the rearends to LSD? This is the only beef I have with the car.

WHAT...e90's have no LSD, this is an outrage, do you have a sport?

 Uh... the E46 nor E36 had limited slip differentials. Only the M3s/M5s come with them standard. If you want one, you should contact www.diffsonline.com (http://www.diffsonline.com) (a forum sponsor).

E36's were optionable on non-M models.

No LSD is kinda lame. I thought this car would have one (even my late-80's RX-7 had one)... The DTC is a joke, too. From what I understand, turning on DTC effectively locks the differential, but in my experience, it doesn't do a very good job of that, either.

Didn't know that...

Yes, agreed... but from their standpoint, it is cheaper and more effective to not have one. Why put in a mechanical LSD if the electronics are there to make a pretend one? By putting in an open differential, they reduce cost and they use the software to apply brake to the wheel that is spinning too much. As we all know, in an open differential the most power goes to the wheel with the least amount of traction. By applying the brake to the wheel that it spinning, it gives it traction (albeit on the brake pad instead of the ground) which transfers power to the other side. Cheaper more effective way of moving power around.

That being said ... I prefer the LSD myself.

cheaper, but I dont see how more effective.
on a 50k car the 12 dollars it probably costs them to put in a LSD should be done.
CTS sport package has a LSD, and I would say the CTS is a direct competitor to the 3 series.

With the DTC and a standard how does it work? does it just apply the brake more so the brakes are fighting the engine? or does it cut the engine?
I know in the auto 330 i test drove it worked well at keeping the wheels from spinning so it accelorated quick and without it feeling loose. But its always different with a standard.

The difference is in HANDLING. You take a hard corner on the gas and the wheels slip and computer goes crazy. turn off the computer and the inside wheel goes nuts and makes the car loose. Why do you think that ALL great race/handling cars are posi/lsd? You can't go fast using the brake to control the rear wheels. Brakes are for slowing to entry speed only.

None of us are worried about 0-60 times or we would have purchased a LS1 or 2. ( at leas I am not. I love the twisties!)

I dont know if that was geared towards me or not, but I would like to say the a Camaro SS or TA (either one with the upgraded suspension) would destroy a non m 3 series all over the place, not just a straight line. When up against an M its a closer battle, but dont assume the M will win.

Bottom line to me is not have the LSD seems cheap and as said a really lame thing for BMW to do.

No car bashing at all. Just pissed at BMW for the non lsd. My brother has a 02 firehawk which is faster but doesn't handle as well as my E90 b/c of understeer. to heavy up front, but you can stear the car with the throttle well b/c of the LSD and Horseposer. That is my gripe with the BMW. you can't stear with the throttle. There is enough horsepower to swing out the tail, but the rearend won't let you.

E36's were optionable on non-M models.

They were in the cold weather package for cars without ACS and a dealer option that wasn't advertised. All e36 m3s have LSD.

I've got the cold weather package on my 330i and it definitely doesn't have LSD.
