theres this kid in town with this 95 325i stock and me in my 318is with intake and exaust, but he's always telling everyone in school that he has the only BMW with a turbo in it in paris, well i knew better than that and he was always running his mouth, so one night we pull up side by side downtown (note that i am in dire need of a new clutch) and the lights red, so i look over and he is revving itup so i do the same i rev it up to bout 3 1/2 or 4 grand and when the light goes green i didnt drop the clutch but it was dang near that and i look over and im ahead and i could hear his car and i talked to him afterwards and he had the pedal to the floor but i couldnt believe i was ahead all the way through 1st and i caught second and spun it a lil bit and after i hit third is when we had to back off cuz the road split but he had started to pull ahead of me when i hit third i think my clutch slipped when i hit third also but why didnt he dog stomp me i figured i was going to have my @$$ handed to me, whats wrong with his car?

you were able to spin it going from 1st-2nd in a 318? i'm impressed, all of the 325's I driven could barely chip going from 1st-2nd.

I believe it cause i race my friend all the time. I have a 1998 318ti and he has a 2002 325ci and i have him till about 75 all the time. Both of our cars are auto but mine is just so light that i can jump off the line. He catches me at 75 though and its over after that.

I'm gonna go ahead and try to put an end to this shit right here. First off autos actually are, hate to say it, as fast as manuals when dragging. Second, I'm sorry man, 318's are not fast, whereas an 02 325 e46 is, maybe not smokin, but still pretty fast. I don't even know if I could take an e46, but I know I would smoke a 318 sans DASC.

NO!!!!! Let me put an end to this story. I know for sure alot of ppl on here have never even driven a 318is. I have a 328i and use to have a 318is. 325s and 328s are slow until you go over 80+ mph. In the end, BMW are AUTOBAHN cars!!!! 0-60 i get smoked by every damn ricer out there in my 328, e.g. MR2 non turbo, 200sx, rx7, skyline, civic vti and integra type r, subaru, evo, etc etc..... everything, I hate to admit it but its true and everyone on here knows it true. The only way I can beat SOME of them is on the highway on rolling starts 80+mph

Ok .... the more 318 owners get into this thread, the worse it gets.

Only way a 318i can be anywhere close as fast as the other 3series is at a track or auto-x as they are indeed lighter. anywhere else ... not a chance.

The fact that you think an auto is as fast as a manual in a drag race for any BMW negates anything else you say. If you have an E36 325i you can definately keep up with an E46 325i from a dig. They're not that fast.

Oh yeah and chirping a 318 is possible i'm sure, i used to be able to do it in my slow as sin e21 320i

[QUOTE=rollmpower]The fact that you think an auto is as fast as a manual in a drag race for any BMW negates anything else you say."

if this is true Why do the majority of drag racers have autos? There is no margin for error. The fastest civic in the world is an auto just to give an example.

On factory production cars, autos will always be slower than a manual. Now, when I say auto, I mean a transmission with a torque converter. It's a fact of life. But, transmissions like SMG, F1, etc. are electronically controlled manual transmissions. They are programmed to shift faster than you and I can. These types of transmissions can make for a very fast car indeed. I have heard of autos used for drag racing. I think the serious guys use a highly modified 2 speed from the 50's or something. The shifting is usually controlled by solenoids at specific RPS/gears.

it's not about grammer or spelling, it's about readability: muct of yau cen steil raed whet I'm trpemg to tiye as lamg as my feirt amd lest latuurs aie reght...

but it's really hard for someone to read something when it begins to ramble on in long sentences like this without periods or any kind of punctuation because your mind just starts to find it hard to stay interested once I ramble beyond what you can group together as sets of coherent thoughts that would be otherwise differenciated by punctuation in fact it even becomes hard for me to write like this because as I read back over what I just wrote my train of thought seems to ramble and causes me to become confused even to the point that if you started to try and put periods in between what I was just saying in that last paragraph some of it might not even make any sense anymore

I don't know alot about BMW's but it would seem to me that a 325/8 which is 6 cylinder, regardless of extra weight, would at least beat, if not smoke a 318, with only has 4.

It's not a race car, it's not fast by any means, quick on the highway but at the end of the day, even civics can waste them from the lights.

wow...

ok... first of all... to who ever said they get beat my ricers all the time, i'm sorry you suck at life. civics and all those other bs cars are slow as hell.

secondly... who ever said the e46 325 is hella fast is wrong, because i've held with a 330 on the interstate.

third... who ever said that 3 series are fast neeeds to go get their head checked, our cars are not fast in stock form. You need to learn what fast is.

fourth... the person who started this thread needs to go get hooked on phonics cause that was some horrible grammar. I know my grammar sucks most of the time, but i had problems reading that.

wow...so much misinformation in this thread.

first off, autos are NOT faster than manuals, but they are more consistent since a retarded chimpanzee can mash the gas down in an auto, and launching a manual transmission consistently takes lots of practice, which the average driver does not have, thus each driver will be different when given the same car in a manual.

secondly, 325/328s are not FAST, they are quick, and they are not awesome on the highway. i dont know why everyone says that the m52 and m50 were geared for the autobahn, bc after 80 my 328is was a pig. i owned a lightly modded 328, and its NOTHING when compared to my 540i/6, at any speed, and forget it being close from 80+, the 3 shouldnt be in the same zip code.

and lets just pretend that a 318i and a 325/328 raced, the only way the 318 could ever get a lead is if the 325/328 driver launched in 2nd gear. torque is what is going to propel a car from a standstill, and teh 318 doesnt have any.

hey I got a 318iC and true about the budget thing and all but nice cars especially for summer and all. Real nice car and it is a bmw so w00t w00t. But yes sadly at 138? or is it 139? hp it is a slow car. No doubt about that. And as for that post about getting an m3 or nothing at all the 318i is nice and I'm too broke to afford an m3 so hmph! lol but whateva I dun wanna get rid of this car it's awesome and if I do get an m3 I'm keeping this baby lol. well i do believe the story... shit happens! bad drivers suck! but but i will say this giving 2 even drivers one driving a 318 modded and the other driving a 325 stock I would only imagine the 318 would still get smoked. even the William Zubrick's 318is with all the bolt ons only puts out 131whp/120lbs vs the 325 stock 163whp/161lbs so its not even a competition......
unless your going FI dont mod the 318 its a fun car just not a strait line racer.

Because they have upgraded trannies with shift kits that allow the car to shift faster than humanly possible. On the other hand, with a stock transmission a normal human will be able to outshift the hell out of an auto with a stick.

Not to mention the fact that you're working with 4 gears instead of 5. Yes with the better ratio diffs the autos are STILL at a disadvantage in stock to near stock form.

Don't bring in full race cars and compare their setups to what we're talking about here, it doesn't work.

Believe it or not, I am actually going to not call 'total' bs...i dont know about the whole computer crash thing though...

but in terms of chirping into second, the first gen. RX7 with 101hp that i drove for awhile could do that...
