I've heard wonders of these trucks, and i've seen them around and really liked them but i've never had the chance to race one until tonite......

........i was heading down fairfax county parkway and this silver lightning blows past me, noticing the angel eyes at night he hit his brakes and slowed down next to me. At first i say no because i was trying to be good then he revved his engine and gunned it, and slowed back down next to me. I can hear his exhaust scream as he gives it a lil more gas, but this time we stay dead even.

at about 60 in 5th gear, i give in..... i downshift to 4th and gun it, simulateously as tho he could see me downshift he guns it too and gets about half a cars length jump. but i kill his jump and start to pull on him, 80 comes around and we're even and right as i thought i was gonna take the lead he hits traffic and slams on his breaks and i dip around the guy in front of me at about 100. We ran outta room to finish as we went our seperate ways... we complimented each other on the cars gave a thumbs up and left.

Good sports.

You sure it was a real Lightning? He actually put in neutral to rev at you? i got destroyed by a Lightning on the freeway before but he was far from stock. The one you raced must have been stock. Good job. I love those trucks

Why were you in 4th at 60mph? You should have been in THRID! This is why most guys with M3's are bad drivers, wrong gears, slow shifting. But good kill!

First, at 60, start in 3rd.

Also, you sure it was a real lightning? I mean it wouldn't seem to off if you started in third, but to stick with him/pass him after starting in 4th, it seems a bit odd.

Lightnings can easily take e36 m3s up to 100+, at 110-120 they start to hit the aerodynamicless wall.

Seems about right...I raced a stock lightning in my stock 330ci and we were pretty much even...with me pulling slightly and then started to walk him once his truck shifted to 4th and we hit triple digits. In my case though I shifted to 3rd, you have a faster car w/ mods, so I guess you didn't have to...

Nice kill :)

our cars aren't that much faster, we still need to downshift to 3rd at that speed.

What lightnings are you guys racing anyways? There is a few stories of me and Tom (Trepan) racing and none of them, have I been anywhere close. From a dig or roll.

Our first races we were both stock, except for my rims. We raced from a dig, and 2 40 mph rolls the first time we met. From a dig, I had him out of the hole, but by 2nd, he had already evened things up, and third was all over for me.

Then after I got intake and exhaust, he had a pulley upgrade and tune, and well it was no competition. We were even out of the hole, as I shifted to 2nd, it got uglier and uglier.

These guys must just be leaving their trucks in "D" and mashing the gas. They would do much better to drop it into 2nd, and then shift up to "D". That is how Tom spanked me so bad.

Aren't they all autos? Did he drop it at highway speed into neutral to rev?:confused That's probably not too smart...with reverse being just a slight eff-up away...

A stock lightning will run mid to high 13's bone stock. If he had an exhaust and who knows what else..... he should have smoked you esspecially with your poor driving.

Keep in mind as well guys that even among stock L-trucks, all year models are not equal. You'll have to excuse me as I can't recall the line-break year (seems like 01 was it) but the later models make a good bit more power than the older ones. As well, just like a 03/04 Cobra, the barest smattering of bolt-ons and these things are mid to low 12 sec monsters. And they can get signifiactly more nasty....theres an old, ex-pro wrestler who is local, some time back CP did some tune work on his L-truck, and it was ticking along at about 640 rwhp and 680 lb tq., and that was before the 100 shot of giggle. :help :D

thx for all the replies... but i'll be the first to admit i'm not the best of drivers, i wasn't sure whether to go to third but after a few close money shifts i always second guess myself when dropping 2 gears, but i'm taking driving schools in the summer so we'll fix that problem :buttrock

and i used to be real into lightnings, i'm sure it was a real lightning but it was definatly a few years older......how he revved at me? i'm not sure but he did

Tom, you're right, I think it was 01, but something around there. Maybe 00, but they did get like a 50chp power boost.

They are all autos, shifting up to rev, is kind of retarded, but meh, whatever. The guy had to have left it in D and justmashed it, which kills it.

But yeah Tom, the other Tom (Trepan) is pushing good power on his, and he has dont like $1200 in mods. Did high flow cats (cat-backs dont do crap for them but sound), pulley upgrade to boost 12psi, and got it tuned. He is in the 12's easily.
A guy in his old lightning group had over 600whp and was in the 10's.

:help The idea of a truck that fast always scares me. With all that power Id like to be closer to the ground.

Yeah a catback exh, pulley and tune is pretty much a guaranteed 12 sec time slip.

Ive personally witnessed an L-truck dip into the 9's back in 2004 at World Ford Challenge 7 in St. Louis, which by the way Im pretty sure was the first time that an L-truck had seen 9s. It was Diablosports truck, with I belive a fella named Willie Fiorgia behind the whee. That truck was making 700 rwhp before the multi-stage digital progressive direct port nitrous kicked in (try saying that 3 times fast lol). Oh and the paint job was WICKED. :cool

i raced a lightning once in my 77 chevy 1/2ton with a 383 stroker and smopked his butt. We started at a light minding my own business and he pulls up reving his engine and stuff so i dropped it to 1st and lets say by the time i hit 80 in 2nd he was way behind me. this would have been a mid to late 90's lighting

Just look at what speed you're traveling at to determine optimum gear.

2nd tops out @ 60...3rd @ 90...4th @ 120...........

You might have raced a 1st gen L brother. Those were nothing more than a F150 with a 351 Windsor and a stout tranny. Great base to start from but in stock form....nothing like the newer ones. I don't recall the year models, but it was early-mid '90s, the boxier style. Had some funny looking mag wheels too.

yeah, I remember the first time I saw one, I was like "Double you tea eff mate?" I thought it was a fake. But it was 2 body styles ago for the F-150.

Oh and to the poster, you should have lost. You might be a bad driver yourself, but obviously, the SVT driver was 100x worse. Good kill none the less.

Anyone remember the video of the E46 m3 absolutley blowing the doors of some cocky a-holes in a SVT Lightning?

i am thinking it was prob around 96, 97 ford. but my truck was pretty well setup, intake, holley 750 double carb, headers, 10:1 compression, cant remember the ratio of diff though, i took on plenty of stangs and other trucks and was pretty unstopable for a while. i raced a friend once on I80 around DesMoines he had a digital spedo and we were going like 120 and i had to shut it down due to exhaust coming in the cab. All i had was headers, short pipe and supertrap mufflers ending before the end of the truck cab. Wish i still had the truck

LOL you picked 2 of the 3 years they did not make a Lightning. Heres the breakdown:

-1st gen was '93-'95 rated at 240 hp, 340 lb tq

-skipped '96, '97, '98

-2nd Gen picked up in '99, which were rated 360 hp 440 lb tq

-2001 upped the ante to 380 hp, 450 lb tq.

tom isn't saying it wasn't a lightning. he is saying it wasn't a 96 or 97. The 1st gen (boxy style) ended in 95.

In 99 they started teh pure sex styling, and in 01 they kept the same styling but made it faster. So you either raced a 99-03 or a 93-95. I wanna say you probably raced a 93-95.

Tom didn't provide great pics, due to their size, but you can easily find pics of the trucks on the internet. The first generation lightnings also had Lightning on the sides and the tailgate.

Thank you for clarifying, I was not at all implying that powell didn't race a Lightning, just that he didn't race a 96 or a 97 one. :D

Yeah those pics were poo, oh well I didn't think they would come out so small. But yeah, if you are interested a quick google search will net you about 7.2 trillion pics of F150 Lightnings. a stock lightning will beat a 330 fairly easily. stock they trap at 100, add intake/exhaust/pulley/tune and you have a deep 12 second pickup!

Yes off the line, I would have no contest, but since we were in the triple digits and BMW's shine at the top end, and Lightnings hit aerodynamic walls past 100, then my race story is about right...it was funny acutally, I could hear his supercharger screaming [I had my sunroof on tilt,] and once his truck shifted to 4th...then I really started to walk him :)

i can see you pulling on a stock lightning after 100+ when they become flying bricks, but it shouldnt be easy!

fwiw...its a scary thought to think of pickups that can go that fast :eyecrazy
