View Full Version : Bored... What kind of maintenance can I do to my E34?
Andryuha 01-28-2006, 03:41 PM Well, surprisingly, I'm not working today and it's very nice outside, and I'm bored out of my mind. I was wondering if there are small things I can do to my 5er maintenance-wise. BTW, I already washed it and cleaned the interior. What else can I do/check?
kesslerbmw 01-28-2006, 05:05 PM change the fuel filter.. I did mine last week.

Quagmire 01-28-2006, 08:21 PM where, how much, and give it to me
abakos 01-28-2006, 08:48 PM maybe the cabin microfilter or 9005 bulb conversions would be worth considering as well...
paintpro21 01-28-2006, 10:24 PM I still need to do my fuel filter. and the cabin filter is a great idea to do also. (I did that one, it was nasty)
how about you replace one piston :D
The Beastmaster 01-28-2006, 10:29 PM Take off your wheels and clean your wheelwells. Then clean your wheels and wax them.
onewhippedpuppy 01-28-2006, 10:45 PM Pull door panels, tighten the nuts that hold on the wood and the screws that attach the handles, replace the broken clips. Tighten the nut on the steering column. Tighten every screw in the interior that you can get to. Lube all the hinges, and seat tracks. Check your hose clamps and intake connections. Air filter, cabin filter, fuel filter. Clean the ICV, TB, MAF. That enough for a day?;)
gota525i 01-28-2006, 11:52 PM Change your microfilter.. Hopefully yours won't look like mine :)

romeox929 01-29-2006, 05:29 AM to sound like a noob, where is the cabin filter? and how would you go about cleaning the ICV (idle control valve)?
EDIT: searched, and found on bmwe34.net on the loc of the cabin filter. now about that ICV...

how many miles till this is done for?
kesslerbmw 01-29-2006, 05:31 AM Is there something better than OEM?
I used an aftermarket one... I don't think there is one thats better than another.. its just a fuel filter.
The cabin Filter is pretty easy... You pull the parpet piece on the passenger side off, then there is a air duct you pull off.. then there is a little cover you pull off and you can pull the filter out long ways.. Ill see if the bentley has some good intructions, if it does Ill shoot some pics of the pages really quick.
kesslerbmw 01-29-2006, 05:32 AM how many miles till this is done for?
I don't know.. I try to replace it every 40-60k... I ended up puting one new hose on, and three new hose clamps on..

That'll be real helpful. I'm illiterally impaired vs visual anyway:D
kesslerbmw 01-29-2006, 05:42 AM Sorry.. my computer is running a little slow tonight... I couldn't find instructions to do it, but I found some pictures that should be helpful.
After you pull the glove box off, you'll pull this off...

Then I think you pull this off...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/kesslerbmw/various/Img_4901.jpg
and there is small cover that is vertical, I think you just pull it out and then pull the filter out..
kesslerbmw 01-29-2006, 05:43 AM It should only take a couple minutes.. I did mine in like 20 minutes, and I didn't have any instructions....
uboatcaptian 01-29-2006, 07:42 AM Yea. My cabin air filter looked like yours gota525i. Not too hard to do once you've got the glove box out of the way and stuff your body in the wheel well one thing that I changed receintly was the valve cover gasket and the spark plug hole gaskets mine were toasted. When I went to change the spark plugs, some of the tubes were half filled with oil. I purchaced a gasket kit with new hold down nuts and their rubber seals for about 55 bucks from bavarian autosport
onewhippedpuppy 01-29-2006, 08:31 AM The ICV (idle control valve) on an M60 is located just above where the intake elbow goes into the throttle body, I'm not sure where it is on a 6. You can't miss it though, it'll be in the intake path, it's aluminum colored, shaped like two cylinders perpendicular to each other. It also has an electrical plug in the end. Inside there's a little door that slides back and forth to control the air for the engine at idle, over time it gets gunked up. Pull it off the car and blast the insides with carb cleaner until the door moves smoothly and easily as you lean the ICV back and forth. It's obvious once you see it.
