Ok so my friend's family gets a new Passat 3.6. I look up stats and see that its pretty quick : 14.4 second quarter mile and 0-62 in 5.9 according to car and driver. I change data bases, and look at the VW site and it says the new Passat 3.6 hits 60 in 6.6. I average the two and figure i have a shot against this guy. We race the entire night...ill just give u highlites or "lowlites" if ur a hardcore E90 330i fan.
Ok so first race we race from about 45 to 80. I get the jump on him at first, but by 70 he's pulling. He puts a car length between us by 85. From 60 to 100 he gets about 1.5 cars in front of me...im thinking damn am i in for a tough night.
We do 4 races from a dig. Since the Passat has a good amount of torque and bad tires, i pull on him the first two races, maybe by 1/2 or 1 full length by 100. Then my friend, decides that he can probably beat me if he doesnt goose it full on off the line so the tires dont spin for as long. Good move by him. Next two races, his tires spin, but not for long, after they stop he starts pulling. I see him in my side mirror and im thinking "o shi* he's coming. At 70 he pullls hard and is 1 car in front of me. From 70-100 he puts another one. Lost to a new passat 0-100 by 2 cars even though his wheels spun for a tad bit .
The new passat is a big improvement from the last one. The last V-16 ran a 16.8 - 16.9 quarter. VW has really done a nice job with this new car. :)

a v-16?

But what are the horsepower/tq figures of the passat? Also is it a v8, or w8 or something? If it is 8 cylinders, that would explain his strong pull on you up top. Passat's generally are big vehicles, but I'm still surprised he was taking you from digs also.

Are you manual or auto?

Wow, I'm assuming you are auto? The 3.6 is a V-6 from VW that makes 280hp, I'm guessing stick for stick it should be a closer run...whatever, nice death I guess...now I'm sad and I'm going to buy a passat :)

All I can say is some people have a really distorted view of the word fast. Trapping 101 stock isn't fast.

Oh that's not what I was implying, just that there are a LOT of cars that trap well over 100mph stock.

Front wheel drive sucks in a sports car. I don't care how much power you're putting down.

People are selling SRT4's because they hate that.

vr6 technically, but they call it the v6. . .its angle is something like 10.5*
yeah, vr6's are close angled v6s. Not quite an inline six and not quite a v6.

why so much hate for VW's?... theyre pretty cool cars IMO

and yea.. 100mph trap speed isnt considered fast when you have a supra, but in the world of stock family sedans.. a 14.3@101 automatic sedan is pretty darn quick:embarrasm

Yes it is, It is faster than a CB750 Honda with jetted carbs and a supertrap exhaust and 180lb rider. best trap speed was 96 mph

I wonder why they would call it a V6? It shares one common head just like an inline engine.

The bottom line is you are comparing a 3 liter car to a 3.6 liter car. That is 20% more displacement, and it really shows from a dig especially in automatics cars because of the proportional increase in torque at lower rpms.

so you are saying stick for stick those cars would be closer in a race right? I'm really curious to run one and see how things go...

I hate this, every car that is coming out now is so much faster than before...it feels like an average car is running 0-60 times of about 8 secs and 1/4 mile tiles of about 16 secs...I remember about 10 years ago if you car was running a 0-60 time of 8 secs, you had a pretty quick car...:help

e.g. My friend had a FWD Audi 100cs...it was running a 0-60 time of 9.89 secs [according to magazine's of course]...now Passat's are running faster times than 330's...I love technology and competition between car companies! :)

All good. More so for VW though! Guess we'll all have to wait and see when they do the comparo's in the mags. Hope it goes well with BMW! Good to see a progression with the industry.

Now I have to watch out for damn Passats! CRAP!

Wonder how the manual vs manual match up would turn out. Should be a good close one I think.

Chalk one up for the Passat!

Just surfed and read some reviews on the new Passat. Should be a driver's race between a 330i vs the 3.6L Passat. Only comes in a 6spd semi-auto. One of the 3 mags had the quickest stat to 60mph at 5.9s. One of the main complaints so far is that loaded, it's over $40k US.

I'd take a 330i over this VW anyday.

Yes it is, It is faster than a CB750 Honda with jetted carbs and a supertrap exhaust and 180lb rider. best trap speed was 96 mph yah, but with what et. . .with a 96 your probably running 13.0-2 or there abouts

I'd take a 330i over this VW anyday. I would too, for the reason of rwd v. fwd (i have driven both cars in question). While the passat's engine feels much more . . . "ballsy", the handling and braking of the 330 make up for the slight lack of power. my opinion might change when the 4 motion 3.6 comes out

The AWD is to come out soon (not sure exactly)...
I just bought (back in Sept) a leftover '05 AWD wagon and while it's slow (200hp) it's amazing in it's handling if you know how to drive AWD.

I bet the new 290hp AWD Passat will be a bit more fun to drive.

I actually prefer my wife's '05 200hp AWD Wagon to my GTi in the turns.

Now I'm wondering why I slapped a turbo on my FWD GTi and am ISO one of those Synchro GTi's :) .

And I echo what the other guy said, a 100mph trap is def not fast in the grand scheme of things, but for a heavy sedan it's not too shabby.

EDIT: I said, "it's amazing in it's handling if you know how to drive AWD". To clarify, it's a loose suspension and leans quite a bit...and if you drive it like grandma (braking around corners, etc) you'll never really know.

Does your GTI 3L VR6 turbo have a LSD?

yah the old one was really slow compaired to the new one. my family had an 02 v6 wagon (fwd) until the lease expired a couple of months ago.

wasn't a great handler though (heavy car + fwd + luxury suspension)

Yea,
But it doesn't help much.
Damn FWD. Still, nothing compares to accelerating through a turn with RWD/AWD.

I dont know about you all but the price to modify are Bimmers is quite outrageous when compared to other vehicles and Im not talkin Civs.... Seriously the turbo 1-2gs from the supplier on its own dosent cost that much so essentially we r paying an extra 10grand or more for the tubing and intercooler and various componets.....its time someone made a huge price cut and maybe they would have better sales......when demand is great and there is a surplus supply that no-one can afford...it = slow BMW's

take into account the 3.6 vr6 passat is their top model and most on the street are going to be the 2.0t, and in that case you would've taken him. but just like any forced induction car, chip it and it becomes a new car...
