Hi everyone, this is my first post in audio. I have been wanting to add some bass to my system for a while and a friend of mine is selling his JL W-08 sub with a box for $100. I was wonding if anyone knows if this is a good subwoofer?? i.e sound quality, how hard it hits, etc. I don't need the best sound quality in the world, but I also don't want to buy a piece of crap. YOur opinions would be greatly appreciated.

the W0's are their entry level speakers. not too bad sounding for the price and take little power. if you are on a serious budget, go for it. otherwise i would save up for a little longer and get a good suality setup.

it's actually called a 12W0-8 - 12" diameter, W0 line, 8 ohms - the issue being is it a dual 8 ohm sub, or a single 8 ohm sub?

Personally, I think you can do a whole lot better for around $125 then the W0, but the price isn't bad. It will sound ok, but it won't handle a lot of power.

Thanks for the responses. I basically figured that I would get a fairly inexpensive sub and then spend a decent amount ($300) on a nice amp so that I could upgrade my system later. What would you guys recommend at aprox 150?

150$ for a sub? if that is the question, here are a couple of options...i have used almost every conceivable option myself and if you are jsut wanting some good bass to even out your system go with like a Alpine Type R 10 or even a Type S for that matter. very good little subs that only require small amounts of power. check out woofersetc.com. i have purchased equipment from them for about 3 years now.

Somehow I doubt you've used anywhere near every conceivable option.

Alpine speakers are awesome
I personally have the Type S's in my car. I have midrange, high's and lows all alpine. If you are looking to get a budget system i would HIGHLY suggest getting their 400w amp model #MRV F545 as well as their entry level Type E (or if you have enough cash) get the S or R.

The classes go from lowest to highest E,S,R,X

Alpine Type-R's are not too bad, many guys out there swear by them. Adire Audio has some subs for sale again now, Soundsplinter, if you have ever heard of them, have some nice options in that price range.
