i bought some used SSR Comp wheels that were colored anthracite in the centers with a machined lip. it originally looked like this...

but then i had a specialty shop totally strip out the paint and polish the lip, and now it looks like this....

going from a machined lip to a polished lip made a world of a difference!
my question is, Can I polish the entire rim exactly like how the shop polished the lips myself?
is there a DIY guide?
what materials and tools do i need?
is this a DIY job or should i let the pros handle this one?

It will be a lot more work than the lips were, as they were already machined smooth. The rest of the wheel would have to be stripped to the metal and polished with abrasives. It would be quite a lot of work. You might want to ask your shop how much they would charge to do it, and then weigh that against the time and effort you'd have invested in doing it yourself. Personally, I don't think those would look very good completely polished. Having just a small part of it polished (lip) draws attention to it, whereas completely polished could end up looking cheap.

Polishing aluminum is fun, but a lot of work, and black stuff everywhere....

A good place to start is with a kit from http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/
