Ok guys, I did something really stupid tonight. I accdentally connected the wrong battery wires to my Infinity Basslink II. So I connected the battery + to the ground on the amp and the ground wire to the + on the amp. Whoops!

As soon as I did it, there was a poof of smoke coming from the amp.

Is it completely busted? Or can I salvage it somehow?

I tried hooking it up normally but it doesn't work now. Doh!

Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

You will need to have atech take a look. If you are lucky, the amp was diode protected and the diode burned, or it may have burned a trace off the circuit board that can be jumpered. Don't give up, but expect to pay for the education.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm going to take it to a stereo repair place and see how much it's gonna cost me. I hope it's under $150. Anymore than than, and I'll just get a new (ie. better) sub/amp combo. Any recommendations in the $600 range? Space is not an issue.

With 600$ you can buy good 1600 amp and good 1200 sub. It is not a problem, just next time make sure you are connecting it properly :)

1600 amp? 1200 sub? WTH?

You are not doing too good, may be burned up, beautiful car though!

I did the same thing when I installed my Basslink. I didn't get any smoke... I only had sparks fly and blew the fuse on the Basslink. It wouldn't power up, so I decided to look at the BMW's fuses. I blew one of the fuses in there too. Once I changed the BMW fuse, the Basslink powered up.

For $600 I'll sell you my 1 yr old 12W7 in a custom 1.5 CF slot ported enclosure. It is big - it will take up 90% of the space in an E36 trunk. But if you want big, this is your ticket to happiness. You WILL need at least 500W of clean power to run it though. A JL 500/1 or equivalent will do nicely.

I am selling it because the thing is too darn heavy. Box and enclosure weigh around 120 pounds. (Never got a chance to bring it into the post office for an exact weight. Have a pulley mounted on the garage ceiling so I can install it into the car by myself. Sorry, but Harken pulley not included.)
