View Full Version : Anyone here wax their license plate(s)?
Ben Carufel 09-12-2002, 04:21 PM I washed her today, and threw on a coat of Klasse AIO, Klasse SG, and a topper of 3M Imperial Hand Glaze...and then I noticed her license plate lying on my workbench (I always take it off to wash and Klasse behind)...which got me thinking...
10 minutes later the plate had a coat of Klasse AIO, SG, and 3M IHG to match the car...and whoa is it shiny! :)
Definitely worth the 10 minutes it took...
Hyperion 09-12-2002, 04:26 PM GREAT.... Now it can reflect those radar beams better...:biglaughb
Ben Carufel 09-12-2002, 04:28 PM LOL. No, see, the original owner opted for the Cloaking Device...so I don't have to worry about radar or any petty little things like that...

Bozo325 09-15-2002, 06:45 PM I remember you were looking for a job awhile back...
You have so much energy and enthusiasm at fixing your car up.. why don't you start your own auto renovation/detail business?
Work your own hours and make one hell of a lot more than a bus boy. "Ben's Careful Auto Detail" Could be your ticket to becoming a multi-millionaire.
Ben Carufel 09-16-2002, 01:24 AM I'm like a step and a half ahead of you! :) Thanks for looking out for me...I appreciate your memory...
I already have a psuedo auto-detailing business. I live in a pretty nice neighborhood and most of the neighbors drive German or Italian cars, or high-end Japanese cars. I usually get "stuck" washing Lexus, MB, BMW, Audi, Porsche (just one -- a 911), or Ferrari (just one again, a Testarossa) products...and it's a whole lot of fun...
So yeah, that is somewhat my job...The work isn't wholly steady, i.e. I might make $600 one weekend (like this weekend) and $150 the next, but it's money...and it's a good excuse not to get a real job...I just haven't quite found a way to make it into a huge business, though...I'm still working on that...but I've been getting into boats lately and there's tons of money to be made there...
And yes, having no boss is NICE...and working my own hours (for the most part...sometimes I have to cater to the customer's needs) is pretty nice too...
Thanks for the name, though! I think I just found a new name for my company!
SilverStreak 09-16-2002, 12:16 PM In NJ, we have front plates  so I wax it to make cleaning the bugs off easier later...
joe325i 09-16-2002, 12:21 PM dave.. its only illegal if you get cought... i think im gonna remove mine:devillook
SilverStreak 09-17-2002, 08:09 AM Mine's already on there, why leave the marks and risk the extra attention....
big A 09-17-2002, 10:05 AM You are using the 3M Imperial Hand glaze first, right? It strips the wax and does not leave a protective finish.
Just checking.
If you used as a topper on some of those high end customer cars, you might want to give them a "complementary" wash and put a coat of wax on there before oxidation starts taking effect.
Instructions are on the bottle and here more info... http://www.carcareonline.com/imp_hand_glaze_1010x.html
I have been using this product for around 13 years, the 32oz from a paint supply store.
And while I am at it, order the 32 oz from carcareonline or purchase at an automotive paint supply store. It has a different composition then the retail grey bottle. Check the MSDS of each on 3M's site.
joe325i 09-17-2002, 05:25 PM LICENCE PLATE DELETE!

So the smaller grayish/black bottle is different than the bigger amount of hand glaze? I still find that the black bottle works very well.
Yes ben, you should hand glaze first, that gets the oxidation off, and leaves the paint very clean (free of oxidation, wax, and contaminates) for the wax to stick to. Then you apply a layer of wax on top of the clean layer.
An application of hand glaze after waxing would strip the fresh wax off.
joe325i 09-17-2002, 09:16 PM ot question.

About every 6 months, or sooner, I
Wash
Hand Glaze
Wax once with P21S
Done :)
The rest of the time I just give the car a wash with some good quality soap.

It's illegal to run without front plates in Texas, but I haven't gotten caught the year that I have been driving my car! I have the plate handy inside just in case, so I can pop it up on the dash.
big A 09-17-2002, 10:35 PM If you check out the MSDS you will see the different chemical makeup between the two. I have used the black bottle and it works well, it just does not seem to work as well or last as long.
Joe325i,
I agree with Bry on the routine:
wash (Zaino soap)
3M Imperial Hand Glaze
Wax (I prefer Zaino)
I only clay bar maybe once a year after washing on the top of the back bumper to get the gritty grime off.
joe325i 09-18-2002, 06:09 AM thanks guys
and rember
its only illegal if you get cought:devillook
Ben Carufel 09-19-2002, 02:22 AM Guys...
IHG takes wax off...Klasse AIO and SG are acrylic...so it just tops them...
