View Full Version : E46 Subwoofer Enclosure
Kevlar 09-12-2002, 01:48 PM Some of you guys may be interested in this. I know it fits the E46 M3 Coupe (no convertible). The subwoofer enclosure works can be made for a 8", 10" or 12" sub, but the sub cannot have a top mount depth of more than 7" (so choose wisely). The enclosure has a volume of about 1 cubic foot, so that will limit your selections as well.
I know he is doing testing now on different subs that will work with the enclosure. If you guys want, I'll keep you all posted.

JetBlackE46 09-12-2002, 04:47 PM how much? and how's it sound? looks clean....
is that the one that richp is making?
Kevlar 09-12-2002, 04:58 PM THe price I think is like $350. I haven't heard it in person yet (as I don't have an E46) but he says it's pretty good. The guy making this is Corey.
themadhatter 09-12-2002, 06:39 PM looks very promising, I was going to forgo subs till this idea rolled around.
cool!

I thought about it too, but I can't live without my music. Plus, I hear that the HK stereo system really lacks in the low frequency department. If you try to extract max sound quality from the stock setup, the rear deck rattles profusely... of course I've only heard, I don't have a car ... yet ... to test it with.
themadhatter 09-12-2002, 10:34 PM my mb quart Q's and DSD's are coming with me from my 323is. I'm going to work then into the non-HK system. Never buy the factory upgrade 100% waste of cash and pure garbage.
I'll use the factory source since I wanted the navigation and I'll pick up the MP3 CD changer (alpine upgrade) and use the audio input with my MD player.
This sub-setup would work great with an JLAudio 10W7 with alot of poly fill and a clean 500watt amp. Do you know if Corey is working on a smaller capacity such as .66 Cubic feet?
No more hacking for me. :D

Kevlar 09-13-2002, 01:41 AM I upgraded to the HK system because I figured it would keep me happy for the 6 or so months it took me to get the money to upgrade the subwoofer. Plus I heard it's alot easier to upgrade to a subwoofer with the HK system installed... (I paid an additional $600 to make it easier to tear out... I think I need my head examined). The subwoofer output can be stolen from the factory HK subs and directed into a seperate amp to drive the 12" pictured above.
I also heard that it's possible to upgrade the factory subs and amp and get a decent sounding system out of that, but I don't know if that will give me the flexibility I want easily.
I'm not sure if Corey is going to make a .66 cubic foot enclosure, but wouldn't it be possible to just put some foam in the box? That would reduce the cubic capacity of the box (forgive me if I over simplified it... normally I just give my keys and a blank check to my stereo guy and he does all the leg work).
t00h0t 09-13-2002, 08:54 AM Hello everyone! This is my first post on these message boards, they are great by the way!! I love the format!
The enclosure is $350 + 20 for shipping. This is a fiberglass enclosure that comes fully carpeted, mounted to the black battery cover tray and wired. You can use this with or without the HK upgrade. As Kevlar said it is easier to install with the HK upgrade, but its still possible without. I would be more than happy to assist anyone who purchases and enclosure with their setup.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me at t00h0t@tampabay.rr.com
Thanks Kevlar for posting my enclosure!!!
themadhatter 09-13-2002, 09:22 AM toohot,
welcome to the board, I hope you enjoy your time here. :)
many of us will be interested in the is kit that you've designed, would it be possible to work a smaller encloser in the future to accomodate JL's line of high end subs?

t00h0t 09-13-2002, 09:41 AM JL Audio has some really great subs. I am waiting for a review from a customer of mine who is installing a JL Audio 10W6v2 this weekend. The W7 series subwoofers are very deep. The 10W7 would be the only sub that could fit. However the enclosure hole would need to be lowered (not centered) to accommodate the depth. The enclosure is about 1 cf. You should note that a sub will decrease this volume. So it really depends on how large your sub it. You can also achieve a smaller volume by adding polyfill as you and Kevlar suggested. I have a few customers that I am awaiting reviews from so I can build a list of recommended subs. My Image Dynamics IDQ sub sounds so good as it is. I highly recommend that sub. Great clean sound, with enough rattle to vibrate your eyes if you turn it up enough! :)
themadhatter 09-13-2002, 09:53 AM good point, I overlooked the fact that there is a speaker in there!
I have great experience with 10W6's, I had two in my 323is and I have two in my Tahoe. Great performers and a single would be perfect with my need for a real trunk this time around....gotta have some room for the golf clubs...right? :)
t00h0t 09-13-2002, 10:24 AM That was my whole purpose for making this enclosure for myself. I hated having a huge box in my trunk, and having to take it out anytime I needed to use my trunk. Also didn't want to hear my dealership talk about voiding my warranty. They told me they were going to if they found out I installed a sound system. With this I just pop it out and they never know its there. I figured I would lose some sound volume and quality going to a small enclosure in the corner, but to my surprise it sounds just as good if not better! This enclosure made me a real believer in sealed boxes.

No worries, they have no legal right to void your warranty for adding a stereo system.
t00h0t 09-13-2002, 01:02 PM Yeah I tell them that but they seem to think they can. I would just rather not make it any harder than it already is to get good service on my car.
How long have you been driving race cars? My father used to be a race car driver. Now he teaches driving schools. We have a 74 911 RSR that we race. We were just at Watkins Glen a few months ago. All I can say is WOW that track was UNREAL! We might be going to Daytona this year, but since I am still a rookie I might not get to drive. I was a second faster than my father at Watkins... It great cause I get to tease him all the time about that. I have a friend who is in the Hooters Pro Cup series. Andrew Medlin. Him and I used to race go carts when we were younger.
Here are some pics of my race car. I am in the process of photochopping out the 1 in our number that we had to use at Watkins. I am the one in the white gloves.

fattrapper 09-13-2002, 02:44 PM Corey, this looks great!
BTW, is that a clear turn signal bulb I see in one of your mounting pictures on your website? If so where did you get it. I've been looking to replace my amber bulbs for some time now but to no avail.
Thanks!
t00h0t 09-13-2002, 03:08 PM I have the Osram Diadem Turn signals in all 4 corners of my car. They give a bluish red glow when not lit and an orange glow when lit to stay legal. Really neat. I purchased them from www.bekkers.com, I had to call and order them.
fattrapper 09-13-2002, 03:11 PM Thanks!
jcoop 09-13-2002, 08:12 PM How does good clean bass get into the car ? Do you remove the HK subs and the bass goes in through those empty holes. Does a setup like this cause your trunk to rattle. Would this setup be affected by putting objects in your trunk, seems like I always have junk in my trunk ? I agree the HK system with some help in the bass department would be a system I could live with. Also I listen to rock, jazz, r&b, top 40. So I am not looking for super loud super low bass just some good tight hard hitting stuff.
t00h0t 09-13-2002, 08:24 PM If you are into hard pounding knock your socks off bass :buttrock, then this isn't it.
jcoop, we enjoy the same kind of music and sound. You would love this setup. The bass travels through the seats and the rear deck. I removed the stock HK subs (waste of space and weight) and that opened up more holes to pass bass though. I had to dynamat my license plate, it didn't rattle like crazy but it was enough to bug me. The trunk is very sound proof, you can't even hear the bass from outside until you open the windows. As for stuff in your trunk, are you worried about it damaging the sub or about it absorbing the bass? I have a screen that goes over the sub when I have stuff in the trunk. As for absorbing sound, I didn't notice much when I recently had a trunk full of suit cases and stuff.
I see you are in Florida, where? If you live close I could give you a demo of the sound? I live in Tampa/St. Pete

Hey sounds good I live in Melbourne just across on the East Coast
Do you ever go to O Town ? I would like to listen to how it sounds. Of course I haven't been over that way in a couple of years wouldn't mind going over there for a day. I will let you know when my car comes and maybe we can meet some where and I can see and hear it. And yes on the full trunk I would have to have something over the sub to protect it and I was concerned about sound being weakend or muffeled from objects in the trunk.
Thanks, jcoop
t00h0t 09-15-2002, 05:38 PM I plan on going to the Halloween Horror Nights at Islands of Adventure this year. I should be awesome cause its in their new park. I plan on making a weekend out of it. Maybe we could meet up then. I'll shoot you an email when I figure out the exact dates.
jcoop 09-15-2002, 07:20 PM Sound Great let me know........................
