View Full Version : Warning: Science Content :) Side Impact Developments
Steve J. 01-20-2006, 09:07 PM Science Content Mythbusters Style :)
For anyone interested, RCE has an article on Side impact collision cage developments, including full carbon/aramid honeycomb shear oanels that are 2x+ stiffer than traditional Xbrace. Notice they use X braces as the standard on these rally cars, however these new development are going to change racing in touring cars I think.
This is going way beyond the side impact "crush zones" that have been in place in european GT racing for a while, these new systems are going to be much more complex, and completely enclose the driver, in a sense.
For anyone interested, please pickup the Feb RCE.
Or subscribe online and get it online!
SRiley 01-20-2006, 09:30 PM For those less nerdy folks, RCE is Race Car Engineering, a UK based magazine.
Awaiting mine now... :)

Steve J. 01-20-2006, 10:40 PM Yar, sorry about that.
I love the Online Subscription, easily archived, active hyperlinks, search feature, and its cheaper!
SG_M3 01-20-2006, 11:09 PM The Barns and Noble near me carries it, i'll go pick it up.
Steve J. 01-20-2006, 11:17 PM I think the yearly subscription for online is $70, how much does B&N charge you, $10?
Every issue is awesome in my opinion, but from the recent cage threads, this has a literal "outside the box" point of view on the advancement of safety.
One of the issues they brought up was egress, and the plans they have are going to make it a bit tougher, but it'll all come with time.
SG_M3 01-20-2006, 11:21 PM yeah its $9.25 at B&N, have last month right in front me. I agree its a great read every month.
Vince S. 01-21-2006, 01:03 AM RCE is definitely worth subscribing.
The other magazine not available at newstand is SAE's Automotive Engineering. Not terrribly involved in racing but still a good source of the automotive world from a techincal point of view. For nerds as well.
I think it was SAE World Congress 2004 that a team of engineers from Ford and academics gave a session talk on crush behavior of honeycomb specimens. The same year at the SAE Motorsports Engineering Conference there was a presentation on something related to racecar seat design for side impact protection.

Usually every year at one of the conferences there is a safety presentation.
Auto engineering is mostly an OEM based magazine, but it has some interesting things usually.

Hey Steve,
I am actually planning to attend the congress this year. Apparently led by a team of excutives from BMW AG. Yes mostly OE stuff.
Have you attended Performance Racing Industry Tradeshow before? I saw their ad in GRM in the last few issues.

I'm hoping to go next year, too much going on this year to even think about going down.
The last conference we particpated in we just sent the two grad students because that had some business to take care of at the conference, other than that, there's only so much that can be done at the motorsports conference...unless you are looking to make friends :)
