View Full Version : Ring & Pinion swap
littelm3 01-19-2006, 08:34 PM Wondering if anyone has any info on the subject, links, write ups, etc.??
I have rebuilt many tranny's, and rears in American cars, but not a BMW.
I just want to swap the ring and pinion from NON LSD diff to my LSD. I don't plan on doing anything to the jackpot, just swapping gears.
I have the tools for the job, I think. I have the tools to measure backlash, and pinion depth, anything else?
Any info, or where to find info, I would GREATLY appreciate!!
Thanks
Steve J. 01-19-2006, 08:45 PM If you have experience building diffs, then you probably won't have much trouble.
But its nothing something i would experiment on if you were not 100% sure.
littelm3 01-19-2006, 09:01 PM I agree....
I have a bunch of old diffs laying around, I plan on opening some up, and taking a look see.
Just wanted some info......
Thanks

Steve J. 01-19-2006, 11:52 PM I took 30 seconds and searched....you should try.

Not quite the same. Thats just taking the carrier out, cleaning things, and putting it back together.
You should check gear pattern, preload, etc when doing a ring & pinion gear swap in to another case, though I know with 'merican cars it is not always standard practice.
Steve J. 01-20-2006, 01:23 AM Yea, i was mostly just trying to make him search for it...couple minutes of simple googling can probably solve his question.

The problem is there is almost no information on ring and pinion swaps.

I agree!!! Its been tough. Also my computer skills are not the best....
Thanks
littelm3 01-20-2006, 09:37 AM I have found a supporting vender, that will sell ring and pinions but states..."Ring and Pinion does NOT come with install instructions..."
JETninja 01-20-2006, 01:34 PM I swapped Ring gears cause I wanted to switch out a busted carrier. (end plate had busted when some of those bolts came out or sheared)
The TIS is great help, nothing on E36+ but instead look at the E30 M3. Internals and process is almost the same. I found diddly on the net...used 4x4 guides for some tips. BMW info is hush hush.....
I'll tell you right now while BMW forgot locktite on the little hex heads, the Ring Gear bolts are a bitch! I tried several different Gas Stations, none had powerful enough Air Guns. Finally at a Pep Boys the mech had a 2nd gun (1 attempt no way) that start moving them....though he slipped on one and f'd up the head. (that was another story to remove!!!)
The second one I did a ghetto job. Neighbor had a new cheapo gun, and a half full Nitrogen bottle. Up to 2k psi! Put on a regulator and hd hose. At about 400lbs they started spinning off....it was sweet! :D
Go to a GM/Chevy Parts Dept (not all Parts stores have it! Search!) for their Yellow Gear Marking paste....so you can check and adjust the lash and pitch.
mentalbc 01-20-2006, 02:27 PM Hey, why don't you have Jason do it for you? :smoke1 :freak
vjlax18 01-20-2006, 02:32 PM :lol Dude, Mental, dude...
black318i 02-14-2006, 02:17 AM How did you remove the ring gear? Is it pressed on?

Tommy R 02-14-2006, 01:37 PM Have you contacted Tom Bleh? Don't know his screen name here, but it should come up in a search. I wouldn't imagine a ring & pinion swap would be all that difficult, but then again I was also surprised that a 2.93 gear set is NOT interchangeable with a 3.15 gear set (according to Tom). I wouldn't have expected that at all.
Good luck and let us know if you find anything. FWIW, I checked the wear pattern when I opened up my M3 diff and it looked good. Didn't mess with pinion depth of lateral ring gear placement.
