I was planning on entering this event with my '02 Z06. I sent in for the packet and ended up having a work conflict. Then the baby came and the Z is gone. But I see no reason why a BMW cannot be very competitive in that kind of a race. I am thinking of entering the fastest class I can without having to get a roll bar. I think that is the 120mph class.

If anyone else wants to get in on this, let me know. I will go through my Silver State Classic documentation and see what is needed for us to sign up. This time, I think I am just going to take some vacation time from work so that there will be no conflicts.

Let me know if you guys are interested.

I was in NV just this morning running my own 'open race'. Spooner summit was slow going because of snow so I had to make up time between Carson City and Reno to make my flight.

It's a completely awesome event! However, I don't have a car really appropriate for doing it these days. All you really need is any powerful car with some safety equipment, a decent street alignment and very well balanced wheels.

To be competitive you need a co-driver that can keep you on the proper time schedule so you can come closest to your target average speed. The type of car only matters as to what run group you would enter.

True.

from what I hear, you don't want to be in the 120 class with an M3...

What do you hear?

that a) your first time you should always run in one of the slowest two classes, and b) its a lot harder to maintain those speeds than you thing during the race.

this from people who have done it several times

have you seen that vid of the 350Z turbo flip 5 times from about 4 years ago?

Instead of going by hearsay, I think I will just do it and run in whatever class is appropriate.

Not saying that it will be the same as commuting to work or going to the store. If that were the case, it would not be worth doing. Just saying that I have a car that is appropriate for that kind of a race, albeit not in the 180mph class, but appropriate nonetheless one of the other classes.

I understand your friends' fear and apprehension. Some people get scared at high speeds and have never raced before, but I think I can handle the 120mph class. But we shall see. Nothing is set in stone at this time. BTW, I know I will have to drop speed during the narrows and will have to make it up on the straights.

But for those of you interested in actually doing this, let me know.

You all are some scared people...

just a question about a video...
a tire bursts at 300kph, rear end gets loose, and many flips in the dessert sand. Guy gets out in the end.

Not scared at all. Thought about this a few times but decided it would be rather boring just shooting down a highway at 110 (Novices are limited to the 110 class without race director approval). And since the objective is to see who can come closest to the target speed average you really need a navigator with knowledge of how to compute time/distance/speed average or else it is nothing more than a high-speed joyride. I've drivien at 155 in a straight line and it's no big deal. I'll stick to burning my competition dollars on the track.

I do the straight line thing also, but I am trying to diversify.

This is pretty much just straight line driving at high speed with consistency being the objective. Have you done any track events?

Yes. You?

That looks awesome. I would love to do something like that.

Averaging 125's not a big deal in a stock e36 m3 (what I drove my first time out) although my Navigatrix (a magazine editor) was a little tense. After about 135-140 the car behaves a little differently, and as you come over some of those crests (it's not all flat and straight) 25-30mph sidewinds can move you over to the side to the road before you know what's going on. IAC, even in ~8-9 miles sector of The Narrows we averaged 110 without even really pushing hard.

The skill comes in actually trying to keep your car at a specific speed, which is harder than it sounds. Consider that most BMW speedos read ~5mph high and my best run had us arrive 1.3 seconds early, averaging .053 mph too fast, and we got 5th place - it is quite competitive.

Anyway, Ely really turns out for the racers, with a Car show, and a variety of other activities for the weekend. All lots of fun.

Very informative. Sounds like a blast!!! Looking forward to it.

I agree, cars start to do very weird things at about the 140mph mark, and then at about 175mph they get weird again.

I would enter in the slowest catagory possiable and see what happens.

Good Luck
