View Full Version : Stock SRT-4 vs. Modded E36 M3...
Vbp6us 01-19-2006, 06:16 PM On my way home around 9PM I'm cruising at around 70mph with lanes pretty open on the 163N. I get to the section where the 163 and 15 merge when I see ae's in the back ground. Upon taking a closer look, I see that it is one of my all time favorite Bimmers...the e36 M3!
Now at this point I had no intention to race, just kind of wanted to stare at it. I had a VERY little gas left so I was scared of not making it home. So we are cruising and I get closer only to see how damn nice it is! I let him pass me at a slow roll while i'm gawking the whole time. My brother being with me and all eggs me on to race. I pull up slowly and kind of look over to see who is driving. I notice there is a gal in the passenger seat too.
I put it in fourth and gun it for a second so he knows what I want. He takes the bait. Not immediately though. He waits for a good 1/8th mile and then guns it as I'm about to gun it again. We gun it at the same time, nevertheless and he pulls about a car length on me but very slowly. We starteed getting into some scarey triple digit speeds so we both shut down.
Clearly he pulled on me. The SRT-4 is known to be a roll king but this M was ace! We exchange thumbs up and I'm off on my merry way. Having his plates memorized, I look him up on none other than Bimmerforums. His plate was Mveed so it was easy to find. I PM him and he is an extremely nice guy. Socal guys probably know him. Mods on his car you ask?
My car as it was that night had cams, exhaust, pullies, 3.5" HFM, Motorsport injectors, CAI, S/W tuning and a full tank of pump gas for motor mods.

Side note: I am in no way getting rid of my SRT-4 because of this incident. I have ALWAYS liked the e36 M3 and in fact, I bought the SRT in an impulse buying fashion. The SRT-4 is faster straight line in comparison to most e36 M3s but it lacks in other categories. Look at my join date and you will see that I was researching the M late last year, during the same time I got my SRT-4. From that pic, I just figured out that he goes to the same school as me too!
jrhaile 01-19-2006, 06:23 PM Nice race and you my friend one very admirable SRT-4 driver. You don't see too many of those around so I congradulate you on being a cool cat :buttrock
Now go to Stage 3/4 and go work some mofo's :)

Thanks for the kind words. I know some people are blinded by pride in what they drive. I have decided against working on the SRT and just selling it as is. I had some great plans but traction will be the limiting factor, unfortunately (FWD ftl).

cams, exhaust, pullies, 3.5" HFM, Motorsport injectors, CAI, S/W tuning and a full tank of pump gas for motor mods.
honorable death! Those mods on that E36 M3 yield some pretty decent gains so I am sure a stock M3 would have provided a closer (if not completely different) outcome.

What are you asking for the SRT-4? It's a shame that you have decided to sell.
IS 300_M 01-19-2006, 07:00 PM .........The SRT-4 is known to be a roll king but .......
roll king? maybe a prince? or son of a prince? oh i know great grandson of a king:D

:mad I know all about that :mad
Can't wait to get my challenger :D

Nope. I have no idea.

Unfortunately lots of owners making some power know this far too well. :( The challenger is going to be sweet! :redspot
roll king? maybe a prince? or son of a prince? oh i know great grandson of a king:D
Let's just say it puts Evo and STi owners in their spot. ;)
What are you asking for the SRT-4? It's a shame that you have decided to sell.
Honestly, I'm just not digging being so much debt with school in session and all. I just want a cheaper car (M3 will be cheaper, I did the math) with some grunt. It's on ebay so what ever it goes for on there is what I will sell it for.
Vbp6us 01-20-2006, 02:51 AM What a small world we live in. I saw him at school today but he didn't see me. :( He has a NICE e36! I was driving up to park and these guys in a Viper start pointing at me for some reason, lol.

Oh no them's fightin werds. :stickoutt
I used to own an '04 SRT-4 with stage 2 and 3" exhaust. If you want lots of tunable power they are great cars. No doubt. But if you want tunable power that you can put to the ground, then they can be frustrating.

or perhaps maybe you couldn't drive it steiner ol' boy? :stickoutt
But no the Stage 2 is definately enough to mop up most vehicles on teh road.........including mine. But that RWD is a deal breaker.

l3it3r 01-20-2006, 06:44 AM Stage 2 is nice and all, ESPECIALLY with 'toys', but I'm partial to the stage one and tune plan, that dude "arronneon" has the formula to a T. If you install parts x,y,z (etc) you WILL get 300whp+ he gaurentees it. And he highly reccomends AGAINST the s2. all i need is downpipe, fuel returnline w/fpr and a tune. I'll be at 300+ whp :D
NYQUEENZ 01-20-2006, 09:13 AM I pulled on a Neon easy. No mods.. a 325is with a 3.2 swap and CAI.. but now there will be no contest. i'm even more modded..

for reference I have a little more done, custom dyno tune, and a more efficient driveline and my car put down 250

Vbp6us 01-20-2006, 03:43 PM That's crazy. I just want something cheaper and older, that's all. I came to this conclusion yesterday at a stop light...most people on the road have underpowered cars meaning an M3 (not slow but not the fastest thing out these days) would still be plenty fast for the occasional testy drivers that want a piece.
The only difference I can see is people will not notice the M3 as a suspect for racing whereas my SRT-4, they will rollup, stare, honk, point, and what ever it takes to get me to respond. :(
Armo95 01-20-2006, 04:33 PM Mveed's car moves very well for what he has done to it. I remember back in the days when I had my 95 M3, I'd see him post in the E36 M3 section and IIRC, he was putting down somewhere in the neighborhood of ~250rwhp. He has a really sweet software tune on his car.
Steiner 01-20-2006, 06:05 PM or perhaps maybe you couldn't drive it steiner ol' boy? :stickoutt

Looked who decided to show up! For a while there I thought you might have been the guy the cops were chasing threw Houston when I didn't see you posting anywhere. :stickoutt
And yeah...there's probably more truth to that critique of my FWD launching skills than you know. I thought I broke a motor mount one time because of how violently the car shook at a stop light. Nowadays I just rev to 6k, let the clutch out, and keep my right foot down all the way. It's good for a smile every time. :buttrock
l3it3r 01-20-2006, 08:03 PM yeah, fwd ftl.. I hate that.. but when you do it right, it's oh-so-sweet!
Vbp6us 01-20-2006, 09:56 PM I don't usually dump the clutch or punch it in first because of this reason. I mean, first is pretty short any ways. This is precisely why I said it is a roll king...from a roll. :)
I love my car but before I put any thing in it, I think it's best to get rid of it.
Armo95 01-20-2006, 10:01 PM I love my car but before I put any thing in it, I think it's best to get rid of it.
Well, modding just dies out with age (at least for most folks). I modded the crap out of my RX7 R1, then my 95 M3, then my 02 Z06. Now with the M5, I don't even feel like modding anymore (besides the fact that this car is just a beauty and I wouldn't want to compromise with modding her).
It just gets old after a while, really.
I sound like an old fart and I'm only 22 :D
Vbp6us 01-20-2006, 10:48 PM Damn...you're doing something right driving a 2000 M5 at 22 years of age! I'm 21 and I can't afford an SRT-4. :(
Modding is fun but only when it's free. :D
Armo95 01-20-2006, 10:49 PM Damn...you're doing something right driving a 2000 M5 at 22 years of age!
Work hard to play hard, man. That's all :)
Vbp6us 01-20-2006, 10:58 PM I do work hard but the pay off is not always there. :D All kidding aside, I'm thankful for what I have (more than most university students) so no complaining here.
I'll be getting a 1998 or so M3 soon, hopefully.
JBgotM 01-21-2006, 12:38 AM Well, modding just dies out with age (at least for most folks). I modded the crap out of my RX7 R1, then my 95 M3, then my 02 Z06. you started with really good cars too early, and got burnt out. ;)
I would like to get something nice for the street (like your M5) then have a racecar on the side for the fun stuff.
Bsaint 01-21-2006, 12:41 AM good stuff... i walked a black srt4 with mopar stage II upgrade he kept up pretty well his friend filmed it, but i have yet to see it online :( o well
then a friend of mine has the cleanest Srt4 ive ever seen. Took off the spoiler made it single exhuast (stock looking) tinted all black a goldish vynal on the side gold light wheels and upgradded to the max pushing some 400+ he destroyed me and pops flames a foot long just by reving... i want to get some footage of it and put it on here... its nasty
Vbp6us 01-21-2006, 01:51 AM There are some insane SRT-4s out there, no doubt. I just need an e36 M3, lol. :D
There's a black SRT-4 in the valley that's got a stage 2 turbo amongst other mods. He's destroyed some people I know, but I've never been able to find him late at night when I'm just out cruisin.

Haha, no, long story short, I went on leave for like 2 weeks, then when I came back I was overwhelmed by all of the Bold Blue titles to read...so I kept slacking, then I kept going on leave, before I went ot afghanistan. I posted seldomly, and then when I came over here, bf.c was blocked by websense. So I finally subscribed to proxify.com and now I'm satisfying my addiciton. :)
Armo, you're only 22? Dayum, much better than I thought. I figured i wasn't doing too bad with my 97 m3, tons of cash wasted into the audio system, etc at 21. But then I came to the DC area, and a friend of mine is now 19 with a e46 m3, and all sorts of crap done to it (MPoweredM on the boards).

Yea i'm from Long Island (Strong Island) i live and work in DC. I must say with the prices rising in NY and now jobs ... leave more room for home intrusions like i hear on the news..

you won't get paid as much, but you get more house for the $
4 years ago my sister bought a nice little 3bed/2bath 2car for $93K but things are going up quick. I am about to close on a 3/2 w/ 2+ and 1485ft wof about $170k

Coastal Mass in general. Our property in New Seabury (Mashpee) cost more that what we got from the sale of both properties in Florida.

mitchelrl 01-23-2006, 10:58 AM I haven't really had a chance to run an SRT-4 yet in my car. I saw a yellow one converted to single exhaust on the highway, but it was too busy for us to really get on it, he understood that too and didn't get stupid.
Vbp6us 01-23-2006, 02:08 PM Single exhaust occasionally means modded to hell. 3" piping all the way, I'm willing to bet.
l3it3r 01-23-2006, 04:23 PM The newest and greatest is the 60mm+ throttle bodies, new intake manifold, equal length header, and a 4" exhasut off the turbo... I'm jealous of people that can spen money on their cars right now :( lol

whao ive noticed the exact opposite to be honest in my area....its hard to get the high end cars to race around here. But all of the SRT-4's and the like are always at it. And i've also noticed its hard to get people to race me and I have no idea why....the only people that never fail to show up is the Mustang owners, they always look like they are about to cry when they get shown up by a BMW its funny:lol Oh srry misread but my point still stands I think... Agreed
OneUltimate 01-25-2006, 12:05 AM srt to an e36 M huh?
GET ready to spen alot of money to have it "ok" fast and if it breaks you might as well jump off a bridge.
ugh
Vbp6us 01-25-2006, 02:18 AM Dude, are you UltimateOne on SRTforums? If it's you, I don't know what to say but get a life man. You posted a thread about your friend which is a moderator on some BMW forum in regards to his test drive of your SRT-4. He supposedly warned the forum's members if they bash the srt-4 or anything in that thread bannishment will be in order for them.
Again, if it is you (ultimateone) then you are a loser, sorry. In the end, the e36 M3 is still a classic though, what's the SRT-4? I love my car (SRT-4) but know when something else has more bragging rights. ;)
OneUltimate 01-25-2006, 03:20 AM haha relax dude its me.
Honestly I absolutely love LOVE my friends e36 M3's especially CMT's and they do have there place in history as an awesome car. But Im not sure if you know what your getting into here. I use to own a BMW also and will warn you of upkeep and cost of anything that might breakdown. It will be hard for you to find a decent M with low miles under 17-20k.
Anyways Im just busting balls but really wanted to let you know what your getting into, its a whole another world, an expensive one. Modifying a BMW will net you low gains but big wallet hits.
Good luck broseff

After having worked at a performance shop for quite some time I have to agree with him. The cost to mod and upkeep a BMW is sicking sometimes especially when a decent exhaust which only weilds a true 5 hp at the wheels cost almost 1500 dollars....whereas with most other cars u will see about 15 to the wheels....It gets pricy but in the end its still a BMW thats moded out and the true car guys see that as somethin more respectable the the common as assholes cars that are all modded to hell.
BMW///3.2L 01-25-2006, 08:28 AM Ahhh...the SRT-4 street racer. Always a great day when I meet one. Win or lose. Nice cars. Even when you lose, you still get to hear that turbo poppin' by!

Vbp6us 01-26-2006, 12:34 AM Maybe they know you really have a 325is and not an M3?
giterdone 01-26-2006, 03:19 AM vbp, I'll tell ya, the m3 wont break you like these guys say. Just if you are smart (which I hardly ever am) you'll keep a bit of money in savings, just in case. But that is just life, the only time i was nearly screwed was when my car "broke" because I hit a manhole cover that was sticking 2" out of the ground, where the gay ass city stripped the road, and left the cover sticking up. It bent my strut and screwed up my wheel. That was of no fault to my car.
A decent exhaust cost $1500? Holy cow, what brand are you frickin buying? Most of the exhaust are $500-800 and one of the most expensive ones is Eissemman and that is like $1100. Rogue Engineering DMS gets 5whp and 5tq (proven by a magazines exhaust shootout) and that cost like $650.
The car is great vbp. You'll love it, it is pretty damn quick, is fun as hell in the turns, and just has a touch of class the SRT can't touch. I still smile when I get on my car, and love looking at it. I bought it Oct 04.

Great yet another attack on my " 325is with and M3 conversion" Its getting old.... read my sig and tell me whats not M3 (besides the vin). I'm not claiming to be a true M but its a conversion thats all... did u even read my sig and since when have people been able to tell whats under the hood without me showin em....srt-4's grant super-powers never knew:chainsaw

just for reference i raced an srt-4 on the highway last night up to around 120 or so and pulled away from him, slowly...twice, even after he got the jump on me both times. once i hit 5th gear it was over, i was consistently pulling away harder and harder.
i can only assume the srt-4 was stock. i only have CAI, m50 intake manifold, 3.5" HFM, software, ltw flywheel, and catback...no cams. I also had a passenger and a half tank of gas.
still i think they are very cool cars, that come with lots of potential, especially for the money.
Nihilation 01-26-2006, 04:40 PM Seems like whenever the SRT4 is mentioned the thread turns 5 pages long. There is more to driving than HP and going straight.
/cheap shot.
+1 for The Ultimate Driving Machine. Afterall, this is bimmerforums, what did you expect?

of course there is, and there is a forum specifically for that. if i owned a geo metro i would still want to post about cars that i have killed in a straight line.
we've all established over and over again that BMWs are not made for straight line speed, but that doesn't mean they aren't faster than a lot of the cars out on the road today.
Brewster 01-27-2006, 02:50 AM you sold your car overseas? :nono
I sold my suv to a guy in Lithuania. He was legit.
l3it3r 01-27-2006, 06:47 AM well, you're lucky, I've had so many scammers contact me from overseas that i just stopped opening emails from other countries!

srry over kill on the price quote i know...its closer to 1200 installed but still thats nowhere near worth the 5 hp to the wheels....but replaceing the headers gives different results more worth the hit to the wallet....
On my M "conversion" i actually lost horsepower when I replaced the cat-back part of the exhaust system....:confused odd i know but they did the dyno runs to prove it and before someone raises the bs flag....NO i dont have em (dyno plots) so bs flag raise away

1200? what exhaust are you quoting? Eissemman and paying a shop to install it?
It is like one hour to install. Hell I got my Rogue DMS used for $300 and installed for $85. So I got my 5hp/tq to the wheels installed for less than $400. I could've installed it myself. Exhausts aren't hard. I'm not very mechanic savvy but I can install an exhaust or intake, or any of the simple mods, that you are adding 400% inflation to the prices of.

s'all good. I'll tell ya, turbos are still pretty pricey. They are $7k at the least. But hell you can get a TT Stage 1 for 7 or 8 (can't remember which) and they net 340-350whp on stock everything. ///3oris on here, has that done. He had 348whp and still had stock exhaust even.

I actually found a turbo with 6psi (2 less than most) for about 3200....
its on turbokits.com for the 95 M3....a new company called Turbo Speciaties Inc, they used to test many of the kits and have now decided to put out their own.....but all the work into getting the block blueprinted and new bearings would push it up to about the 5-6 thousand dollar range....:(
