View Full Version : Need a new diff...
raydoc 01-19-2006, 02:52 PM '98 E36 with about 60k miles (quite a few are hard track miles). I do about 10 DE days a year with BMWCCA clubs (instructor). Told I need a new diff - what do people think of the Metric Mechanic variable slip diff? The car does lift inside wheels on hard turns.
ceegeezM3 01-19-2006, 03:09 PM Talk to Dan @ Diffsonline. Highly recommend, and quite a few club racers are using his diffs.
TC Design 01-19-2006, 03:17 PM Dan has built quite a few diff's for our shop with no problems. http://www.diffsonline.com

magnetic1 01-19-2006, 03:47 PM another option would also be Blanton @ http://www.performancegearing.com
bmxcm 01-19-2006, 04:00 PM how about this kind... http://www.a-t-s-usa.com/ats-products/lsd-carbon.shtml
anybody ever heard or had experience with them? seems like a good alternative (by looking at the website) and I've heard good reviews from a nissan owner...
jayhudson 01-19-2006, 04:50 PM Dan @ diffsonline for me. Please support our forum sponsors.

diffsonline 01-19-2006, 05:07 PM Here I am...
yeah man, we can take care of that for you!
I assume this must be Ray T...
jonmacs22 01-19-2006, 05:07 PM I am not up to date on who the forum sponsors are or anything like that, but I can tell you this:
I had no connection to Dan at Diffsonline when I called to inquire about pricing and availability. He was always responsive almost immediately, always took the time to answer all of my questions, provided great pricing, had my diff to me when he said he would (which was quick turn time), and I would send him my diff from now on no matter what.
That is the type of vendor I want to deal with.
Jon
vanderson 01-19-2006, 05:11 PM Yeah, Dan's the man. Excellent product and service.......
raydoc 01-19-2006, 05:25 PM Dan the man,
Not Ray T.
Stock diff from the factory, noisy, noisy, noisy on turning. Cleaned out the case, full of crud (cooked fluid + what I guess is former clutch plates). Multiple fluid changes later, multiple types of fluid, multiple types of additives, still noisy.
I drive this car hard on the track for DEs. You've probably seen me with Boston or White Mountain events, not too many techno m3 sedans out there.
SG_M3 01-19-2006, 05:35 PM another option would also be Blanton @ http://www.performancegearing.com
i'm very happy with mine, works great.
JonathanL 01-19-2006, 07:35 PM Yeah, Dan's the man. Excellent product and service.......

I recommend getting the suspension and whatnot sorted as well. lifting inside wheel(s) is always a bad thing. Bad for grip and bad for the hardware.

Going to have that done, corner weighting... wasn't planning on the diff part. Now it all gets done together! Probably take it up to VSR for Mario to work on it.
buldogge 01-19-2006, 10:45 PM I use a Metric diff in the E36 ITS car and in the MCoupe. Full-meal-deal with vari-lock (ramp angle mods) and extra clutch.
HIGHLY recommended.
I run 3.73's...you probably want a 3.38 or 3.46 if you still run on the street.
Good luck.

Different guy, too funny.
Either way, I can build anything you want, ratio, ramps, clutches, polished internals, finned covers, you name it I have it.
Also have a full service shop in which I can do the install, corner weight, etc.
Give me a call tomorrow 781 983 2944, and we can go over some options and figure out what will work best for you.
Shop is right off RT 93 in Stoneham also..
Pretty sure I have seen you at many driving events, and I am sure I will see you everywhere this season too. We will be doing as much trackside support as we can...

We are located right in Stoneham, about 10 minutes from downtown Boston.
Yet another satisfied customer right here. Diffsonline and BPG are top notch shops in NE. You can and will not go wrong by using them or their products.

Top this! :D
B.Watts 01-19-2006, 11:53 PM I can't find the CD that I have it stored on, but there's a picture of myself and one of my teamates both nose to tail, all 8 wheels in the air, in Star Mazdas at Road Atlanta because we had to take a little off-track excursion over a big curb to miss another spinning car. :)
Steve J. 01-20-2006, 12:31 AM Jon, you planning to stay in ICC?
Looks like you've been doing really well, when are you going to mvoe back to cars? ;)
Is the track that bad, seems everybody was getting airborne.

Me three, love my blanton diff
bmxcm 01-20-2006, 09:52 AM no one has ever heard of an ATS diff??
also does anyone just sell the internals so you could rebuild it yourself, i think i've seen someone just selling different ratio rings and pinions and such but i can't recall...

Diffsonline sells individual ring and pinion sets and rebuild kits.
m332is 01-20-2006, 02:29 PM I am sitting on a 3.45 LS from BMP. I used it in my e36 325i ITS car before I sold the car. I would guess shipping would be a lot from Rochester NY, but it's a great ratio for the street. Before I turned the 325 into a racecar, it spend a few months on the street with this diff and I really liked it.
Also not a bad race ratio.
I have no clue what a used diff goes for???

bimmerdriver99 01-31-2006, 02:38 PM Kinda off-topic but Im also looking into new gearing. Currently I just have the stock ones in my 99m3 which I think are 3.23? or 3.15? I have the cam kit with basically everything bolt on, and want the new gears now. I am looking into the 3.46 gears on diffsonline.com. I can just buy the gears right if I just want the new ratio and still keep the same ASC that the Car comes with? Or should I get the rebuild kit too?
WIll a knowhow mechanic know how to properlly to the switch? Help me out with some more info please.
m332is 01-31-2006, 03:34 PM The ACS is not is not in the diff so you can change the entire diff or just the gear set and still have your ACS.

The 3.46 goes so well with the cam kit. I have quite a few customers who have done both and rave about the combo.
We can do it either way, provide you with a gearset and you can have a local qualified mechanic do it, or I can have a complete unit built here by us and shipped to you on an exchange basis for $1395 exchanged (plus core deposit) in 3-4 after payment is received. The $1395 is a 2 clutch 40% static lock unit that will hold up well to street driving and the occaisional track day.
The traction control system is electronic and the differential is a mechanical unit that works seperately from the asc. The increased preload/lock in the differential will also cause the traction control to be less invasive in agressive driving situations.
