View Full Version : DC smoking ban
wludavid 01-18-2006, 02:04 PM It's kind of old news by now, but what does everyone think of the smoking ban (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/04/AR2006010401310.html) that passed the DC council a couple weeks ago? Restaurant seating areas will have to comply immediately and bars and clubs have until Jan 1, 2007 to be smoking-free.
Soon your MARB won't stink after a happy hour downtown!
Personally I think it's great. About a year ago we had a bf.c get-together at a bar in Montgomery County (already smokefree by then) and it was a pleasant change. Mont. cty isn't exactly a happenin' place though, so it'll be interesting to see what affects the smoking ban has, if any.
John V 01-18-2006, 02:06 PM I think it's brilliant with one caveat:
How on Earth are we going to know which girls are the ones that put out?

Duh. Go to the mall and offer the 16-year-olds cigs. They're cheaper than drinks at a bar anyway.
jkuper 01-18-2006, 02:08 PM Offer to go outside for a smoke? :dunno
I think its great as well, and I smoke :help
SpeedTheory 01-18-2006, 02:28 PM Meh, going to school in Florida I'm used to the smoking ban everywhere, but CLUBS too? Thats retarded.....in FL its just restaurants....

Dunno about that... his ashtray looked pretty full last time he was over...
Phat Ham 01-18-2006, 04:03 PM I've hung out at a couple of MoGoCo bars and really didn't mind going outside to smoke. But now that I quit it'll be a lot easier to keep from relapsing if I don't have to sit next to a bunch of smokers.

OK, now I know you making shit up. I've owned, hmm, 8 cars and never used an ashtray in any of them. :alright
Personally I'm 100% for it. Two of my Aunts have lung cancer right now, one will probably be dead within a week or two at the most. As an ex-smoker, I believe everyone has the right to smoke if he or she wants to... but everyone else shouldn't be forced to inhale their smoke just to have a good time.
In the same respect, as an ex-smoker, I sympathize with all the people who are displaced by this ban. If the bars/clubs are large enough, I'd like to see a room or floor just for smokers... and I'm not talking like at restaurants where the only thing seperating smoking/non-smoking sections is a booth.
Pack a big ol' dip when you go in. Spit in the nearest empty glass. Done.
Chick dig that.
Poke2120 01-18-2006, 08:21 PM I'd be very surprised if the state of North Carolina passed anything like this ban DC just got. Going to school down here we have 1 main bar that is packed everynight. There are 2 areas, the bar/dance floor area and then the pool table/arcade area. By midnight the entire pool room area is a gigantic cloud of smoke. You can't avoid the smoke, it sticks to your skin and every peice of clothing.
328somewhere 01-18-2006, 08:24 PM How can you go out drinkin without smokin. Glad i dont live in dc but it will suck when i visit. maybe i will go to baltimore instead or do they have the law too?

Nope! Smoke it up!!!! Lots of good areas-Fed Hill, Canton and in a distant third, Fells Point.
wludavid 01-19-2006, 09:05 AM All the smoke in the world won't let you escape from the soul-killing truth that you're in Baltimore. :(

The one main bar in the small town where I went to school was incredibly smokey. You can go in there for brunch on Sunday morning and still have to take a shower when you got home. The smoke residue was everywhere.
J.Snow 01-19-2006, 09:14 AM I'm not a smoker any more and I can understand banning smoking from establishments that serve food and family atmosphere where people may not be old enough to make the decision of whether they want to take the risk of 2nd hand smoke or not, but when I go to a bar or club I expect there to be smoking.
sKunkman 01-19-2006, 02:44 PM I eat regularly at a restaurant in Arlington and they've now outlawed it...you have to smoke outside. I think its rather nice, though we usually sat in the smoking section and it never bothered me. Are they doing it in other places now in Arlington Co.?
jasonknezo 01-19-2006, 02:46 PM wonderful news, i wonder if smoky philadelphia will ever do this
