Any advice on where to live? Good streets, bad streets, etc...

I've been thinking about buying a 2 BR rowhouse (and renting a room out) in Fed Hill or Canton...but renting is still an option.

Either place is a good growth area, pretty pricey right now. As for Fed Hill, closer to Inner Harbor or Key Hwy, the better. As you move out away past the Cross Street area, it can get VERY sketchy.

My friend and I went to a party in Fed Hill back in Dec and we were looking for parking and saw some dude duck into an alleyway, running. Then we saw a drug deal go down (we were like 2-3 blocks from my friend's place). We decided to just park in the Fed Hill bar area/Cross Street and hoof it. A world of difference.

Yes, either Federal Hill or Canton are both good neighborhoods, although they are surrounded by sketchy areas. So be careful.

I would say though that Canton is not as pinned in by shady areas. The surrounding areas like Butcher Hill and Brewer's Hill are starting to get renovated and values are slowly going up. A good time to get in.

I personally like the Fed Hill area. But parking in either area is a real bytch.

Both nice areas. Unless you need to be downtown i'd suggest anything up on the north side in the county. Towson is nice and unless you are right down around the circle it's not terribly expensive. I like the area and it's a 10 minute ride to the harbor. Not to mention you don't have to worry about all the city cancer on you car from people parallel parking. Trust me I bought a Canton car.

Actually, you are right about that. Towson is probably a damn good place to look as well. It's only a few minutes away from the city, and its got a shitload of good things to look to. :stickoutt

Unless you have to be in the city, I'd check Towson as well.

Towson would be a safe bet. I won't pay inflated prices for real estate in Canton or Fed Hill as both are very popular right now. So if you don't have to be in Baltimore City proper it's way cheaper. The further outside I-695 you go, the taxes get lower, parking is more plentiful, and just by living in the county your car insurance is cut in half.

And if you plan on ever having kids, forget about City schools. What a joke...
Check out White Marsh too. Tons of new homes going up in and around that area.

Thanks guys...

I'll be working off sercurity blvd (right of 695) at a client at least 3 days a week during the summer. Otherwise, most of my time will be spent at the office- right on Pratt st, between Howard and Sharp.

One of my friends that lives in Fed Hill told me to try and stay above Fort Ave- even though she owns a house south of it, lol.

I've been checking out the real estate lately, canton seems slightly cheaper, and I know it's slightly quieter, but it's a tough decision - would love to live near the Fed Hill bars.

Just bought a house In Fed Hill this past June and love it! I would def try to find a house right near the bars/cross street. Prices are expensive but its a great investment. Baltimore is up and coming! My house is literally one block from the bars/cross street. There are actually a few places for sale near me. Send me an email to bginsberg1014@yahoo.com if you want some more info on them. :redspot

I live about 15 minutes south of inner harbour b'more, picked up a 3bd 3.5ba waterfront townhouse last year for 227K they are ranging anywhere from 275-389K now depending on the view. I can see the key bridge from my back deck.
If you dont mind a short commute and like the water, checkout stoney beach community or chesnut cove in curtis bay.

other than that stick close to the previously mentioned places
