Nothing set in stone yet. Still talking to people to see what they are up to.

I'll do audi and possibly mid ohio. The only mazda events I plan on doing this year are summit and grand east. They tend to pack the track with a bunch of miatas and rx8s and proceed to not stress passing.

Although Eric instructs for them and he'll give you a great demonstration of the racing line through oaktree.

I just maybe too broke after our Italy trip in the beginning of March to do anything. That's why I said maybe. Question is, will the Nascar trucks show up again?

You have to be an Audi member for Audi events. I am.

Autocross is cheap (well, can be, unless you are running $M), safe and competitive.

A good first school is probably our local chapter school at Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point. Short, 1.1 mile 7-turn track. First day is the Highway Safety School. Second day is Drivers' school. info here http://www.nccbmwcca.org/index.php?driving_schools

The cool thing about NCC schools is the skidpad time, which is not offered at many other schools.

Having said that, I think you would be fine at any school in a novice/beginner group and learn a lot at any track. But SPR is close, speeds are not very high (I would guess 80s at the end of straights in a 328 on street tires?), good instructors and a lot of ppl from your local chapter. I think a place like VIR with 17 turns to remember might be a bit too much for a first timer. But people start there as well. :dunno. Another good thing about Jefferson is that you probably won't need track pads since you won't be slowing down from 120+. Just decent tires, fresh brake fluid and at least 1/2 pad left.

The important thing is to start. I started at Jefferson in 2004 and did 12 days in 2005.

Edit: FWIW, I would like to get my wife to do the NCC school. In a pretty much stock 328.

The audi event would be perfect for you. Both that club and mazda have fantastic instructors and are relatively laid back. However, audi has fewer folks on track and the atmosphere (with the exception of that wonger nub) is very friendly.

Autocross would be the cheapest way to throw your car around for a bit.. but its nothing like a track event. Two totally different things.

If you want to start w/ autoX.. Id suggest a BMW club event as they are more laid back. The SCCA ones are more competitive and you have to spend a lot more time there.

If you want to do a track event... Summit Point is the closest... but certainly not the nicest track around. VIR is nice and the track is longer, BUT with over 17 turns... this could be a bit tricky for a newbie. Id recommend a smaller track like Summit or BeaveRun for a first timer.

Once or twice. They kicked me out for telling my student his 4 door family sedan was a RACEcar, that he needed the biggest bbk he could find, and showing him the early apex technique! :buttrock

I'm hoping to do two NCC schools, a FATT, NASA HPDE during Hyperfest, and the later NASA event at VIR.

If there are any doable events in the fall at MidOhio, I'd love to head up there.

I think Philly SCCA is ok to start. I did my 5th event with them and they seemed to have a format similar to NCC and the people were great.

I'm doing audi in april for sure, then mid ohio in june with audi. What a GREAT event this was last year. Bill, I recommend you do this one. Not sure what else the year holds, I definitely want to try out a BMWCCA event. Still haven't done one of those, yet.

PS - Thanks for the link eric, I looked at registration yesterday, and it wasn't up.

I found that Summit Main was a very easy track to get started on. It's fun and it isnt so long that it's hard to learn. Even though they had the least track time, I found that NASA had some really good instruction for a newbie and they were very organized.

The best club is your local chapter of BMW CCA. Known as National Capital Chapter. http://nccbmwcca.org/

Capitol Driving Club...I had to google it. Let's see. $25/year membership which gets you autocross events at postage stamp size lots. Have you ever been to Harry Grove Stadium? Or Osbourne Park HS?

A weekend at the track is a minimum of 350(event fee) + $100(hotel, which can be avoided at SPR since it's close) + gas (I burn a tank a day easy), pads+tires. It's not a cheap hobby.

And not many are nutty enough to drive 8 hrs to Mid-Ohio for 4 hrs of driving time. No Topeka comments required :)

Yeah, I REALLY like tracking, but I know I will never get addicted. H3ll, I was able to not go at all last year due to other responsibilities.

I like the idea of making a weekend out of farther away events. I plan to do two "away" events and make it a 3-4 day weekend out of it. Take off one day before the event to drive up, another day to drive back.

yeah, I think Mid-Ohio is definitely a 4 day thing. I like it because my wife's sister lives 40 min from the track which means free room and home cooking. And my wife can go with me and not be bored and hang out with her sister. When we went up for the first time last year, on the way back she asked me when we were going back up there again :buttrock

I looked on their website and it said "in the heart of Ohio off 71". I used to take 71. I guess that makes it approx. 6.5-7.0 hours away from the MAR. :dunno

yes, Lexington is about 60 miles NNE of columbus. 10-15 min to get from 71 to the gate.

For a "2-day" event at VIR.. youre looking at:

Event Fee: $350
Hotel Fee: $200 (2 nights)
Gas to get there and back: $50-100 depending if youre towing
Gas at the track: $50-75 for both days
Pads: prolly use half of $160 track pads
Tires: prolly use 1/4 of $400-800 Rcomps..
Food: $20-30/day

It adds up FAST... then you realize your car isnt as fast as others, and you start dumping $ on suspension, intake, exhaust, etc... haha.

You eat too much!

A few things to add. I find the Jeff hard on brakes because there really isn't a lot of time to cool them down. That was the first time I experienced fade and that was with my 4 cylinder and solid rotors. I still don't know SPR. Turn 3 is still a mystery for me. SPR is nice because you might be able to go home at night. VIR has the best facilities of all the local tracks. I don't know if I would recommend the GRand East course to a first timer. I usually take off Friday and am at the track by 3:00 to unload and swap tires. Same with the Glen.

All tracks are different. You really can't think that you need to learn one before going to the next. Everytime you go to the track something is different. Run groups, track conditions, weather conditions.

Audi, I did one school with them. I thought it was well run. And as it has been mentioned, you need to be an Audi member.

I also attended a mazdadrivers.com event. I thought that was well run too.
You do not need to be a member. At least not for the one I attended.

I feel I get the best instruction at NCC schools. I rarely get signed off whereas I am signed off elsewhere. :dunno:

mid Ohio is definately worth the trip...to date it's one of the best road courses I've ever experienced...VIR also is a must...

other tracks to consider:

1) Mosport (bring a set of brass balls with you, this track will demand everything you have!)

2) Watkins Glen (especially in the fall...the region is so beautiful, the track itself is legendary and managed very well...the Glen is a treat to drive each lap if nothing else then the history that it has, and the pace and layout of the circuit)

VIR also is a must...

Im glad I decided not to do the Tarheel event in March now, things didnt go quite as planned this month. :embarrasm

I think the April 10 Corvette event will probably be my first of the RACE season. It gives me time to get a jack and some other assorted things. I need to do VIR though.
