I just moved from cali to charlotte NC and I guess they do a few things different here with the car registrations. I just registered my car here and now I have ten days to get it to an inspection station to get it pass or something. Cali I just pay the fee and get it smog every other year so what’s the inspection? My main problem I’m going to have is the window tinting, the front will pass but the back is a for sure no go with there rules on tinting here (15% rear and back sides)…..Is the tinting a big deal to get passed? Or were will it pass?

anything would help me out

-NC inspections are easy: most of it is just safety: brakes and their lights and windshield wipers and turn signals and such. With a 15% tint you should be OK. The other thing we (Im an NC inspecter) check is the OBD II system on all cars 1996 and newer. Just makes sure there are no emissions issues with the car, so your Check Engine Light CANNOT be on. If you came from Cali then I'm sure your car will pass. Do yall still have tail-pipe sniffer tests in Cali? We just stopped doing that this year.

thats good to know that it should pass, and yep last year when I did my car they put the tail sniffer in so I think they still do... cali sucks with all the smog rules they have now....everything is good on the car and no check light is on so I'll find out mon if it passes if not I'll have to see if anyone in here from charlotte or close can help me out

-Can't really help you out, we use a light meter to measure the light going through the window. You have to get a lighter tint.
-Maybe, JUST MAYBE, you can call the DMV and tell them your situation (you just moved from out of state, the tint is legal in CA, etc...) and they MIGHT get you a waver. MIGHT.

-Only if you have a REAL medical reason that you HAVE to have tinted windows.

NC does indeed have a medical exemption for tint. Pain in the ass for sure, but easier than having your car re-tinted.

The tint is a safety issue for police officers. You would have to have a valid medical condition alot of paper work. Just go get it legal at a tint shop think its like $120 for a car.

I never hear of people getting hassled too often for their tint. I know a few people that have 5% and have never had trouble.
