Did a search but couldn't find anything.....

My 2000 328Ci is not engaging reverse. It will shift fine, but acts like it's still in neutral when in reverse. All other gears are fine. Every now and then you can catch reverse, but mostly, nothing. Anyone know what the problem is? TIA

I Assume this is a manual, if so, your linkage might be damaged. Does this happen in any other gear? But most likely your linkage is damaged and needs to be replaced.

It's an auto. How many miles are on the tranny? If it is over 100,000 it might be time to think about that manual swap.

It does have over 100K - I'm just trying to figure out what it is. It is a slushbox, but it has NO trouble going forward :D

I'm a ZF transmissions tech and I've seen this problem many times.
E46's have 2 different transmissions, ZF=german made (a5s-325z) or gm5 -french made(a5s 390r). You most likely have a GM5 trans.
The no reverse problem is very common on ZF transmission and I've seen it as an intermittent problem on a GM5 transmission.
I hate to say it but I think you need a new or rebuilt transmission.
There are 2 main issues that I'm aware of
1) that clutch inside the transmission fails to hold intermittently.
2) there is a solenoid that controls the torque converter on the GM5 transmission but it also has the ability to lock out reverse in case you accidently shift the car into reverse while driving at cruising speeds.

I had to drive a 99 323i ( same as mine own) for 5 day with my voltmeter connected to the transmission and finally when the trans was at operating temperature i had no reverse and the voltage was pulled low which means the EGS (computer) was doing its job but the mechanical parts weren't

Thanx jetflyer.

Know where I can get a decent ZF trans?

I am 99.9% sure you got GM5 one, but you have to confirm it with the label on the tranny or with the BMW dealership by VIN number.
One place you can call and ask is in Burlingame, CA 94010
tel.650 307-8849
fax 650 401-8478(they rebuild and sell ZFtrans.) around $ 2000.00
The other place is in Portland, OR TRANSMISION EXCHANGE CO.
tel 1-800 776-1191 or 503 284-0768
GM5 would cost around $3500.00- rebuild
