Play my first show tonight helping a friend out by filling in on bass.
We played at 10high. Lots of technical problems plagued us. Guitars going out, the idiot running the sound refused to turn up my monitor. So I couldn't hear what I was playing. Drummer got a bit drunk and missed parts. lol, it was fun though.

Jawsome story huh?

I hate staying up late. Good night.

thats cool

my gf's friend's boyfriend died tonight in a head-on collision, the driver(her bf's friend) was passing a car on a curve...and another car came around the other way. his car then rolled down a steep, deep incline with a creek and trees at the bottom where the car was cut in half when it collided with a tree.

i couldnt sleep tonight, and when i got a call from my gf at 2:30am, i knew why, it was just ironic that i couldnt sleep. and i still cant sleep.

Niiicceeee, you shoulda drank and threw a bottle of jack at the soundman for not listening. The problem with soundguys is they can get away with being the biggest jackasses in the world. You have to be nice to them because they know they can make you sound like shit.

Well, I honestly wasn't too excited about it. I am a guitar player. Only 2 weeks ago my buddy told me he needed a bassist because his had his anniversary last night and wouldn't make it. So only 3 practices for us. Now playing bass isn't a huge strectch for a guitarist but learning the 7 songs and such over 3 practices wasn't fun. Well, it was fun, but it wasn't making me excited because I felt like I could do better if I had a month.

So, I didn't want to create any form of hype and embarrass myself. lol thanks for the thought though.;)

No joke. I think he honestly did that too. He made the vocalist audio inaudible for the crowd for the first 2 songs.

1:30 thats extremely early. On weekends or breaks I work til at least 4 in the morning. It kinda sucks having to get used to school after any break or weekend.

I hate the circadian cycle. I'd prefer it if days were 36 hours long (awake for 24, sleep for 12).

Sound guys in general are a pain in the arse. I have yelled a my fair share, no doubt about that. Thing is, sound guys feel the exact same way about musicians. And I can see why after watching a few guitarists crank their marshall half stack to 11 in a room that fits maybe 100 people.

Sound guy: "You're gonna have to turn it down a little. You're overpowering my mains."
guitar dude: "But I have to crank it to get my tone."
Sound guy: "I don't think you understand. You're not the center of the universe."
guitar dude: "What? I couldn't hear you. I was busy admiring myself."

I've found the best bet is to be as friendly as you can to the sound guy. For the most part as long as you introduce yourself properly and don't come across as having an attitude they'll work with you.

That is funny, but also a marvelously balanced, and rather accurate depiction of how folks can bang heads in a live situation.

I used to have a keyboard player whose amp fit neatly underneath his keyboard rack. It was great because it kept it out of the way, and left space for us to move around on stange, during rehearsal, etc. But because it was in front of him pointing outward, it was harder for him to hear his own playing (and these were the days before cheap monitors were readily available - or at least, ones cheap enough for us to afford). So, as the nights wore on, he would keep nudging his volume higher and higher, adn the rest of us became overwhelmed by it.

Ham makes a good point about dealing with everyone, really, who has an effect on your sound, from house board guys to other bandmates: Make sure you forge good, professional, working relationships with people who have the common goal of getting a good overall sound, and are flexible enough to work toward that goal.

[QUOTE]

I went over to a guy's house who had invited me to come over and jam with him and his bassist last week. He had a Mesa Dual Rectifier with 4x12 cab and bass player had an old SVT with 8x8 or 8x10 cab in a 30x30 room. It was completely ridiclous. I think I lost my hearing about 8 minutes into playing. I took my old Fender Deluxe Reverb which put up the good fight but was completely droned out no matter how low they turned down their amps to accomodate me.

Of course, they suggested I go out and buy a half stack and come back next week......:rolleyes

Thanks, but I was able to get some new tubes under warranty.
It's a Class A amp and they chew through power tubes (El-84s) like an M5 eats gas and oil, so as much as I gig I just have to get used to going through this every few months.

BTW - if you decide to do the half stack thing, I have a mint Boogie 2x12 half back that I'm trying to sell. I'll even deliver it! :)

I'm not too keen on it either, but it's turned out to be fact for me. Here's a really good white paper (allbeit, much is over my head) on Class "A" amps by Randall Smith (President of Mesa Boogie).....

http://www.mesaboogie.com/US/Smith/ClassA-WebVersion.htm

" Class A is the oldest, simplest and least expensive way to wire power tubes. But Class A also runs the hottest, and is the least efficient, least powerful way to operate tubes. And that’s why so much development was aimed at circumventing the inefficiency of Class A power. (Maybe it’s all that waste heat that accounts for much of the tonal warmth!) "

Buzz down to the section called Dissapation and he elaborates on this by using a car in another analogy.

My amp is pretty cranked when I play since it's only 30 watts and each gig is at least 4 hours. Novemeber and December were really busy months for us AND if I factor in all of the moving/bouncing around that the head went through just in travel time, I'm not really suprised that I have to swap the power tubes out now.
I have another head that uses EL-34s and probably won't have to change the tubes in that one for a year or better but it's bigger/heavier and 100 watts (which I really don't need on this gig), so it mainly stays home.
