I have a question, on my E21 320I, recently it wont go into the 3rd gear that easily. Everytime I try to go in the third gear it wont get in, and you hear grinding noise. It started from down shifting now its getting to normal shifting.
Is my tansmission shot?

It might be. Sounds like a shot syncro. Is the proper gear oil in the tranny? When you are trying to go into 3rd from 2nd disengage the clutch and shift to nuetral, then shift back in to 2nd without releasing the clutch and then into 3rd engaing the clutch.

is the syncho hard to replace?

I would assume you would need to be well versed in dissmantling the tranny as well as putting it back together. I have not yet ventured into the mechanics of transmissions.

Try not to downshift if you feel your tranny is not strong or up to par, brake pads are cheaper and much easier to replace then a tranny.
