What structure is the business (llc, S-corp, C-corp?), you should be able to get your tax ID on the IRS's website.
Not sure which industry license youre trying to get

M3Alpine99 01-08-2006, 10:45 PM internet based business... i dont know what type... selling products online...
you tell me what each type is?
jlruddy 01-08-2006, 10:59 PM Don`t need to bother with a business license until you need to open a company bank account (most banks require a business license to open a corporate account if you are not a corp, inc, or LLC). I recommend doing an LLC if you are not planning on having more than 5 employees, (even if you are, LLC is usually the best option). Business license can usually be avoided, as long as you don`t have a storefront or large manufacturing location. PM me if you`d like some help doing an LLC.

I got my LLC at my CPAs.
You can also get one from a lawyer who handles that specific type work.

It took forever to get the state sales tax ID (at least in my situation). The rest of what you mentioned was easy, and here in Clarke county, a biz license was something like $50.
For those saying not to get a license, most of the distributors he's going to be buying from require a biz license, as well as a sales tax ID number.

It's funny you made this thread. I just got my biz license renewal from the county today. :stickoutt
What are you looking to sell? How are you looking to advertise/distribute? I'll be the first to tell you that internet "resale" is a difficult market to crack into, and if you're dealing in auto parts, the margins are particularly low if you've got no real capital with which to stock higher-end merchandise.

Short and simple: it is a contested and conjested market; with too many "autowerkz" or autobahn performance" and not to mention the "Innovation automotive". I cant tell you how many of these business plans Ive seen where the point of differentiation is "We will be a high quality low cost dealer" Um, yeah, thats not rhetoric.
mcbear 01-10-2006, 06:08 PM Shop very carefully for a phone company. They will just about require you to put advertisement in every yellow pages when you have a "business" number. There is no obligation to have a business number with the IRS, just a separate number. If you want an 800 number try and separate the advertising from the number itself. If you go through one of the big phone companies for a biz line, prepare to pay hundreds per month before you make or receive a single call. And local yellow page advertising will not help on a national internet biz.
Google 800 services and see what pops up that can get you a number that will forward to your cell or land line to start out and then to a dedicated line as you grow.

I'm pretty sure Vonage has a "business" line that's about $50 and it includes a 1-800 number. It's been a while since I've looked into any of this, so don't take it as the gospel.
