With my first engine they didn't change the oil, but I am told they are now changing oil on all E46 M3s with the 1200 mile service now. I'll let you know in a few months when I finish breaking in my new engine. I get my car back today. :)


Oh and Kevlar this takes about 1 hour.

I'm getting conflicting reports concerning the 1,200 mile service required for the M3. Some say the engine oil is changed at this service (like Brian above) and others say no, that just tranny and diff oil is changed. I called two BMW service centers today and they both said they do not change the engine oil at 1,200 miles. They both went on to say that the engine oil is synthetic and that it is changed by them at 15,000 miles only, unless the car owner pays for one earlier, which they recommend at 7,500 miles.

Does anyone know the TRUTH? With the recent engine troubles this car has had I'd like to know what the proper guidelines are. Please help as I am having this service performed on my car this Saturday.

I'd change it at 7500 miles... I'm all for long lasting oils and all, but 15,000 on BMW synthetic is a bit much.

1200 miles service does not include oil change. And yes BMW recommends oil change every 15k or whenever the service light comes on. With that said, I will change my oil at 7.5k. I got a great dealer, they give you 6-7 free oil change.

It definately depends on the dealer - mine did change the oil at 1200 miles. It is not on the official BMW checklist as being required at 1200 miles. - at leats for the M3.

I asked this question specifically to my sales rep. when I picked up my M3 a week ago! The sales rep. had no clue so we went over to the Service Manager and asked. He reply was that the engine oil is indeed changed at the 1,200 mile service.

I'll try and follow up when the service is actually performed.

Had took delivary first week of June. 1200 first week of July, no oil change just diff fluid.

I just got confirmation with BMWNA. No oil change at the 1,200 mile service.
