View Full Version : Toyota 1G-GTE in an E21? I'm going to try!

Has anyone had any experience with trying to fit a Toyota 6 cylinder turbo into an E21? Such as the 1G-GTE?

My E21 has just died for the final time (has died on many occasions, sick of fixing it). It has a stuck valve, which is easy enough to fix but is also blowing smoke and leaking oil all over the place. So I've decided to ditch the 2.3 and go with Toyota's 1G-GTE.

Any comments? Do you think/know if it's possible? I'm thinking new engine mounts, cut and shut tailshaft, dodge up a clutch cable...

If u want to ok. I prefer BMW engines.
There are plenty of engines to swap in - from the BMW inventory.

Its up to you. And yeah a Maxda RX7 rotary engine has been swaped,
so the one you want to swap may be ok.

Damn aussies and your damn sacreligious swaps.
I like that engine, but there are so many easier swaps available, nothing turbo out of the box, but still some engines with some seriosu potential. M20 eta, m50, m30, s stuff too.

Good luck.

If you have one sitting around, go for it, by all means. I love crazy swaps, if they improve the performance/functionality of the car.

Is the 1G-GTE lighter than the M20? Power level?

CJ's got a point, jap motors are extremely reliable. I'd trust a Honda with over 200k miles just as much as I'd trust a BMW with only 50k.

my friend has the turbo supra motor from the last generation Supra in his 85 Toyota Corolla, so if it fits there it will fit in the E21. And I would go that way before the M20 if you already have the motor or have it for cheap.
What about if you put the V8 from the Holden Comodore??? or from the Falcon?

don't even think about Isuzu, their quality is as good as daewoo.....the only japanese cars worth looking at are Honda and Toyota, nissan went down in releability and quality. another good choice is Korean Hyundai right now they are just as good as Honda and Toyota. just my .02

ive read ALOT of reviews of isuzu troopers (older ones) that have said they are uber reliable. the newer ones (that rnt gm based such as the i-280, i-360, and ascender) that r the lemons... plus troopers are excellent beach, deseart and mud trucks (the stuff im gonna be using a 4x4 for)

Just do it. There is something to be said about originality. You may not be the only person on the planet who has done it, but in the car world, being 1 in 100 is a pretty priceless number :buttrock

No, we don't care. :)

Why use a 1G-GTE though? 2JZ, 1JZ, 7M; they're all better platforms to start with. That is, if you're looking for more hp. Especially the JZ engines, super reliable and super easy to make high hp.
