LONG BEACH (CNS) - A 16-year-old girl was killed today when the sport
utility vehicle she was driving plunged into a rain-swollen flood control
channel in Long Beach, according to authorities and a broadcast report.
The vehicle veered off Studebaker Road near the Garden Grove (22) Freeway,
plowed through a chain-link fence, tumbled down an embankment and landed
upside down in the Los Cerritos Channel just before 2 p.m., CHP Officer
Patrick Kimball said.
The driver was pulled from the submerged vehicle, taken to a hospital where
she was declared dead, authorities said.
A search near where the vehicle entered the water confirmed that the woman
was the SUV's only occupant, according to Paul Rodriquez of the Long Beach
Fire Department.
The driver was identified as Amanda Carter of Long Beach, NBC4 reported.
At least one passer-by jumped into the fast-moving water in a rescue
attempt, Rodriguez told KCAL9.
Studebaker Road was closed in both directions.
