I just got a Roady XT XM radio for the e34. Blau headuint has a 3.5 mm aux in. When I run it through that input it sounds like crap, pickin up lots of whine and noise. I have been told I need a ground loop islolator - wondering if it does anything to the quality of the signal it is isolating.

I don't know, but here's my opinion: ground loop isolators are a band-aid solution. Do they work? Yes, for most purposes. Is it the "right" way to do it? No. Fix things right - check your grounds. What is the roady powered off of? Cigarette lighter? Make sure its grounded properly.

The head unit is grounded using the OEM wiring and the Roady is powered off the cigarette lighter for now. Was planning on running a different power feed - so its out of sight.

Try that. It might even behoove you to run ground it to the radio's ground so you're eliminating any potential difference.

A ground isolator is cheap and the sound quality is fine. Plug it in and forget about it. Radio Shack has them.
