I want to upgrade my speakers. I have $700-800 to spend on what would be components front and rear and an amp to power them. Any opinions?
p.s. I already have an aftermarket head-unit and I want to install myself. Ive installed two systems before, but Im not knowledgeable on speakers for my bimmer. Thanks

You want just speakers or are you going to run subs as well? Speakers, IIRC you will have to cut the metal in the door to fit them in. We got shafted with the sizes of ours in E36's.

If your going subs... You should buy one of my JL Audio 12" W6's :D

Im gonna run JL subs, but later down the road. I just want to do the speakers right now since I only have one speaker right now, haha the guy who had the car before me ripped his system out and so I only have one......
So I just want some nice components for now. And a four-channel to power them. I was thinking about getting MB Quart PREMIUMs in the front and references in the back, but wasnt sure now that someone said they sound like crap. I dont know what theyre thinking tho, they mustve heard the DISCUS line and not the PRemiums....
I also need to know what size an amp to run with these components.

I would say DLS UP5 components up front.

I'd use DLS Reference 50x2 on that. Zapco has a 50x2 as well.

I hate the sound of MB Quarts in cars. In boards they sound impressive, in a car they start to sound fatuiguing very fast. Also, with those KP mids a tweeter that plays lots of vocals is not a bad thing at all.

I wouldn't do rears - waste of money. Get the best F comps you can get with your budget.

ok, I guess I'll just wait on the rears.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I can't find the DLS Reference amp but I found the UP5 comps at infinitecaraudio.com . Is that a good place to get them?

These comps go in the kicker, correct?
Or do they go in the door panel?

Why not a 4 channel amp? Power your new front components off the front channel and you have the rear channels to bridge to your later planned sub addition. I'd scrub the rears as well, add the money you would have spent on rears to buy even nicer front components. :D For $700-800 you should be able to have a killer front stage especially if you are installing it yourself saving the install labor cash.
I like Rainbow components personally these days, and you cant go wrong with Zapco amps. If your looking for the DLS product, contact el.duderino as he sells the line. You will get much better support from him then any online vendor.

Are DLS comparable to Rainbow or better/worse? I havent heard much so I just want to make sure that they are great-sounding speakers. What size amp should I use (wattage) or should I just start working out a deal with el.duderino?

when it comes to what sounds good in a bimmer I trust el dude's comments as he's installed and listened to many a system

I have yet to hear anyone say anything bad about any DLS products, I just don't like the price range

personally I'm a fan of the little guy who makes components, but most people are skeptical

since that is the case I'll mention another major industry brand I've seen rather cheap as of late, why? I don't know they sound great...........

Polk Momo
you can get a polk momo component set, sub, and 4 channel amp on ebay for around $700 which amazes me

just something for you to consider

I like JL Audio, having owned a W6 years ago, but as with most subs unless you go all out and buy their top of the line unit be prepared to buy another sub sooner than later........

for components, go with the highest line of MB Quarts you can afford, German components in a German car(need i say more) for amps, id get a 4 channel for front and rear. My prefered brands of amps are RF, Alpine, MTX. - good luck

6 years ago I would have agreed, but now after the Fosgate purchase and the multiple faux Quart components being sold nationwide, I'd say DLS or a quality 2-way component set from another big brand

funny how the minute that seemingly forever thread about the demise of MB Quart disappeared that everyone started singing the companies praises again

I would feel very comfortable working a deal with el.duderino if that is the direction you wish to go.
