View Full Version : SSR Competition
jhleung 09-04-2002, 03:03 PM Here are some pics of the SSR Comps I put on. It looks quite smart to me if I might add.
BTW these are SSR Comp v2 wheels. You cannot tell the difference in looks between v1 and v2. v2 has a somewhat thicker hub area (more material) than v1 .... must measure with calipers. Also this is with the new lo-profile centercaps, not the ugly Tire-Rack-made tall-boy style centercaps that were so ugly that took the TR so long to make for the V1 wheels. The new lo-pro centercaps are made by SSR.
In fact if you order SSR Comps TR many times they will tell you that they can only get you BMW-logo centercaps for your wheels and will send them to you. If you ask for SSR centercaps they'll tell you that its not available. This is incorrect, they ARE available, its just not in the database at TR correctly. Kudos to Jim @ TR and also Matt who works in the install area measuring new wheels and such who did some sleuthing around and found that the "Large size SSR caps" fit the BMW-applications SSR Comps even though its not in the database

phid_bombadier 09-04-2002, 04:01 PM Great pics, I've been looking for some pics of the comps on an E36.
Those are 17" right?
Can you possibly snap a closeup pic of the wheel with the wheel well framed in the picture?
Curious how different the V2 looks from V1.
Thanks.
frayed 09-04-2002, 04:30 PM Those kick ass. I've talked with Jim as well, and posted his number on this and the digests, as he seems to be one of the few in the 'know' about the centercap issue. No big "pint glass" centercaps for me when I take the plunge.
Could you discern a performance difference? Many note better braking and turning, some note crisper acceleration.
jhleung 09-04-2002, 05:43 PM Those are 17" right?
Yes, they are 17x8 in the front and 17x8.5 in the rear

A votre service mon ami (look below)

They look the same. You cannot visually tell a difference unless you use some calipers to meaure hub area thickness.

No. I noticed no difference at all. Then again, I'm not all that sensitive to minute changes.

My personal, extremely biased, un-asked-for opinion is that the anthracite Comps look much better on darker colors than lighter colors like red and yellow.
Also I think the Comps look particularly smart in my pics because they match my car's color.
Yet, TR does have silver-colored Comps now, I saw a couple laying around.

Silver being silver paint or polished like the lips of yours?
I have a cosmos car. I always thought the anthracite would look good, but with the introduction of silver, I'd be torn on what to get.

Silver painted centers with polished lip.
BrazeauRacing 09-04-2002, 09:34 PM jhleung, What IS the color of your car (name and paint code)? :95
I recently painted the center's of my cast M3 wheels in BMW Steel Gray Metallic (400) to try and get an SSR "look", but now i think they're too dark. :az:
Oh well... my polished 18x8.5 BBS RC's will be here on Friday! :D
Your car, however, looks awesome with the SSR's! ;)
jhleung 09-04-2002, 09:46 PM The color of the car is Granit Silber (Granite Silver) Its a greyish color that was available on the earlier e36 cars.
Thanks
M3corey 09-04-2002, 11:44 PM hmmm .. are these strong enough for street use ..
i mean i might considering running 17x8.5 all around or maybe 17x9 if that is possible ?
nodemgr 09-05-2002, 12:20 AM Yes, are the strong enough for street use?
DSK M3/4 09-05-2002, 12:51 AM looks good! any chance you can give me the measurement of the hub for the v2 wheels? and the v1 wheels, if you know.

You'll need some goofy arm attachments to a set of calipers to measure hub thickness. I don't have this, the Rack probably does.
norman 09-05-2002, 09:44 PM did they make the v2 stronger than v1 or just cosmetics change, concern with street use.
Those comps look really sweet on your car
