I wanted to upgrade my alternator in my E34 touring. I wanted to know if the alternator from a 5-swap has more amps than the one from a automatic or are they the same?

Thanks

Same part number, so same amperage. Nope.

To get more juice, you will need to find a high output alternator. You can usually find generic ones on car audio sites. Or try an overdrive pulley, but that could overwork the alternator, causing it to overheat and burn out.

An alternator for a 7-series might have a higher output, but I have no idea if it could be adapted to an E34.

I'd second that, surely the alternator on a M70 would be much bigger, since they were dual batteries also?

The thing is, no matter what he does, since they only made one type of M30 alternator, he is going to have to do a custom bracket setup. Not that big a deal. However, I would imagine he would only want to do it once, so he may as well go all-out and get a high-output alternator so he only has to make one set of brackets.
