View Full Version : I kicked a 300 ZX's butt yesterday!

I was on the highway and saw this 300 ZX pullin up on me fast (obvious he wanted some) so I waited until it was clear and then nailed it, the stupid thing was I didn't downshift (don't know why, guess I was paying to much attention to the Outkast blarin on my system!) and so he stayed with me for a tiny bit, but when I really got some speed I left his butt and saw him drift back in my rearview mirror. I only wish I could have raced him from a stop or roll, I would have slaughtered him then! BTW, this was not a twin turbo, I know it would take a real ragged out one or a real bad driver for me to beat one of those, or maybe a turbo of my own!! :-) Anyway, it was another kill for the Bimmer!! Now I'm somethin like 8-1, the loss being to a turbo Eclipse (1st gen.) running 18 psi--that was REAL fast! I want to take my car to the 1/4 strip when it gets warm enough, I think I can pull mid 14's now that I've got the intake, exhaust, and clutch stop(that little thing does really help!). My brother drags his Twin Turbo Stealth a lot and said he thought he could pull a 14.5 in mine after he drove it--we'll see!

Yay! I don't know about you, but from 40 to 125 mph, my bimmer feels sooooo diam good. I raced a GT mustang at highway speeds and I blew him away on the first run, then slowed and he got the jump on me, but I was right with him all the way up to 125. I think from stop and go, that's where we get into trouble. Good kill.

Can you tell us more about the eclipse race? What mods did he have? What happened? Tell us more.

I posted about the Eclipse race back when it happened, but it's been a while so....
This guy basically made a boost controller himself, where he could close the wastegate and have 18 psi (most stock turbo can take). It was DAMN fast, at 50 mph he burned the tires! He said he pulls 130 mph in the 1/4, so that is real fast. Anyway, without the boost on high (I think he was runnin 12psi), I stayed pretty close from about 20-115, like within 3 cars or so. When he had the boost at 18 psi, like I said, he just smoked the tires for a while, so I pulled a tad, then he shot by me. I knew this guy would beat me (I've heard stories of these Eclipses/Talons w/ high boost being REAL fast), but I wanted to see what it could do. I think he was surprised that I just had the intake/exhaust, because he usually blows people off the road. He was cool though, and I got to see a fast car, so it was neat. My brother has a 91 twin turbo Stealth (only 50k miles!) and it is VERY fast stock, he's ran a high 13 in the 1/4. He just ordered a Stillen downpipe for the turbos and a Stillen intake for it, so he will be even faster, should be in the mid 13s. Then, he'll be movin on to the Greddy boost controller, and...HELLO 12's!!!!! It is very fast and with the all wheel drive, he hooks the hell up and is GONE fast...he's been to the track twice and already has pulled a 1.89 60 ft. time--DAMN! It's a Mustang Cobra KILLER too, he's beaten 6 of them, and they were all modded. He even dusted a supercharged Z28 up to the 1/8, then the Z28 passed him by the 1/4. Pretty amazing!!
Ahhhhhhh...I canj't wait for my turbo on my 328!!!! :-)

I do lots of driving up I-95 in the Northeast, and let me tell you, in my totally stock 328is I have kicked so many butts over 65 mph I couldn't even count.

It always happens the same way: I'm in fifth gear cruising around 75 (quiet and stable as ever -- I have yokohama avs db's -- quietest tire ever built) in the fast lane. I see a slow vehicle in my lane (minivan) and an open spot one lane over I want to get into, but there's some punk pulling up on my right in a slammed honda with a really buzzy aftermarket muffler trying to block my change. Without leaving 5th gear I floor it and feel an immediate growling surge (you know that growling surge) and before I know it, I'm over 100, in the right lane, back in the left lane, and about 300 feet ahead of all traffic. The only way I can tell I'm going 110 is the wind noise from the A pillar. That and the center of gravity seems a little higher because of all the wind under the car (need some aerodynamic enhancement I guess).

This happened last week: a big fat Avalon in the fast lane, a dumb looking yellow crx on the right (I like CRX's, but this one was dumb, trust me), and some moron in a bloated 4runner tailgating me literally 3 feet from my bumper. When it was time, I wound her up. The 4Runner looked like it was in reverse, and after about 2 seconds, the crx couldn't keep up. He tried to follow, but at 90 his car was darting up and down on its dumb suspension like it was trying to shake free of its awful aftermarket body cladding, and sounded like a lawnmower on gravel being attacked by a swarm of bees. Everyone kept a comfortable distance from me after that until some wacko in a Pontiac Grand Prix shot by well into the triple digits. That's when my girlfriend told me she finally understood my BMW fascination.

Oh, the Eclipse also had an intake, full exhaust including header and no cats, and some other stuff. It was hella fast! Some day I want to have a twin turbo Stealth or 3000GT of my own to just mod the heck out of and blow down the 1/4 strip. I saw a bone stock looking (except for the huge intercooler--but it even had stock rims!) VR4 in a mag that ran a 10 sec. 1/4--good grief!!! Those cars can be made to go so fast w/out much money spent. A guy who owns a tt Stealth/VR4 shop said with $1,000 my bro could add about 100 hp, that's money well spent!! It's all in those turbos!!

The 300ZX is one of the few cars I really respect... along with the mighty Supra. Just be sure to stay away from any TT ZXs... or a TT Supra  . Anyway, good job, keep up the dusting - all of you. :D
