View Full Version : raced a jetta golf on way to work..
Sean~328i//EastBay 03-01-2001, 01:33 PM we were together at the start, but i nosed ahead but everytime i would shift he would come right back on.
Finally he gave up because he had to take the same left turn i had to. Turned out he works in same company as i do and his golf is a 2.8 litre stock. He claimed a better power-weight ratio than my 328i.
is that right!
Kevlar 03-01-2001, 01:39 PM Was it a Jetta or a Golf or a GTI?
If it was equipped with the 2.8 Liter V6. I'd think the margin of power to weight ratio might be close. If it was equipped with the 1.8L Turbo Engine, he definitely has the power to weight advantage.
They had an article in European Car a while back that said the 1.8T engine out performance the V6 in the same car in every acceleartion test except for 5th gear accelerations from 20-40 and 50-70mph.
Black Majik 03-01-2001, 04:49 PM hehe... the jetta and the golf are two different models of cars by VW...
hehe Jetta Golf, a super Veedub!hehe....
im guessing you raced a VR6, yet im not sure what the displacement is on that engine....
eurospeed 03-01-2001, 05:26 PM The VR6 (2.8L 12v here, 2.9L 24v in Europe) is a great engine and with some very minor mods (intake, chip, etc.) 0-60 could easily be low 6 second territory. Also, was it an A4 (99+) or A3 chassis (pre 99)? Unfortunately, VW made the A4 chassis a bit heavier so they are a tad slower.
Just curious guys, but are we now moving race stories to the Lounge? In the past I left them in GD, but maybe the Lounge makes more sense...
anthonybrennan323 03-01-2001, 06:12 PM you know he'd rather have your 3 than his golf. a guy at work here wanted a bmw but bought a jetta instead and made all of these claims. oh well, i'd rather have your car.
540Rob 03-01-2001, 06:51 PM My friend at work has a 2000 Jetta with the VR6 (5-speed) and I can easily smoke him in my stock 96 328is... could be the driver though.
mpbmw318is 03-01-2001, 10:22 PM dont let yourself think that rob, it'll just hurt your self-esteem- its you and your car! :p
Sean~328i//EastBay 03-02-2001, 06:02 AM yeah! turned out the guy just moved from england, and yes it was the 2.8l v5 gti, but again you guys are right, car is just 6 months old and he wants to trade-it-in for a 330ci
themadhatter 03-03-2001, 12:25 PM eurospeed, i think you're incorrect about the chassis.
the A4 and Passat share the same chassis.
the A3, Golf and Beetle share the other Chassis...I have no idea what my Jetta 1.8t chassis is from, but it isn't the A4.
The 1.8t's are quick, but not when stock!

Nononono....The B4 chassis is the Passat. A3 chassis is VW Golf/Jetta from 1993-1999 and A4 is the newest chassis. These are internal chassis designations from VW, not for Audi. :) The Audi A4 (consumer badging) and the Passat (B4 chassis) do share the same chassis though! Confused yet? ;)
themadhatter 03-04-2001, 02:15 AM ah, now I am truely confused....
so which is the MKII and MKIII?
hmmm....after this, we'll go over the M-B's everything from the classic 126 to the newer 240s.
hahahahahahahahaha....
Thanks for the correction Eurospeed.
eurospeed 03-04-2001, 12:37 PM Just a correction to my other post, B5 is the Passat chassis designation, not B4 as I mistakenly said. :) The MkII, III, IV desgnations correlate with the internal chassis designations, i.e., MkII=A2, MkIII=A3, etc. I notice that the Europeans refer to the platform using Mk* where we usually use A*. I never could figure out the reasoning behind that.
mpbmw318is 03-05-2001, 02:14 AM man, and to think i find it easy to fool most folk with talk about e30's and e36's and e39 ///M5's. . .
themadhatter 03-05-2001, 03:12 PM I really like the E34 M5 :)
