View Full Version : Normal or Not?

I have a question regarding the power band on my 1989, 525i. I recently purchased the car and it is my first BMW so I have little frame of reference. The car seems to lack power below about 3000 rpm, kinda sluggish really, but above 3000 rpm she takes off hard all the way to the rev limiter. It’s the same story in all gears (manual). I know the first thing everyone is going to say is vacuum leak, but I haven’t seen anything that would suggest a big leak and it just doesn’t feel like a vacuum leak to me. The best analogy is to say it feels like the car has turbo. I just wonder if this is normal for the car or not.

I was also wondering if there was a good way to replace the sub-frame bushings without a sub-frame bushing puller.

Finally on the intake there is a little coolant hose that connects to it. Mine has the connection bypassed because the little gasket on the dohicky it connects to was leaking. This was the previous owners solution to fix it. What does this connection do? What do I call the gasket when I go to the dealer so I don’t look like a moron (I’d rather do that here).

I must say it is a definite upgrade from the old Sundance, except for the winter driving. What a horrid winter car, unless you like driving sideways.

Thanks,

Tony

Yep, the 6 cylinder power starts about 3000. Keep it reved.

Can't help with the subframe.

I'm not sure about your motor, but I think the coolant hose goes to the throttle body to warm it up faster.

Before I read the part about the turbo, I was relating to you in the most empathetic way, and I was about to use my own personal "turbo" analogy... but you beat me to it. And that's just the way the car is. As it's already been stated, keep it revved..... and sideways. :D
