I have an '03 M3 and no maintenance issues period. (Bought it used so I didn't go through the infamous recall.)

no problems with my '02, it has had its bearing svc.

maintenance (at a dealer) ain't cheap though. i think it's worth it to get the approx. $1200 extended maintenance and keep $3k or so aside for 50k-100k repairs, or an extended warranty.

I got my 03 with the remainder of the 50K warranty on it and bought the extended for $1200 like saksiri said. It pays for itself considering the two big services before 100,000 miles cost over $600 and $800 respectively, not to mention whatever else goes wrong. I have had my car since march and have put a little over 15,000 on it!! No problems yet....*knock on wood*

sounds to me like haters...:nono

Good to hear guys, My concerns started when a buddy of mine bought a brand new one in 04 and 20K miles later he sold it because "every freaking week there is somethng going wrong" that really put me off along with a couple other members on e46 fanatics.

Buy one. They aren't that bad. Maintenance is more $$$$, but generally needs to be performed less often. The expensive thing about M cars is they are so fun to modify and a blast on the track!!! Now that can get expensive.:buttrock

I own a 04 M3 with 56,000 miles. Ran into a few problems, radio volume knob fell into radio, window trim fell down around 5 times, and needed to replace headers/cats, but warranty saved my butt. I still love the crap out on my M3. Just make sure you have that warraty.

I am one of the guys with TOOOOOOONS of problems. I have had a new engine put in due to the recall. New tranny. Had to pay for a new clutch and flywheel which happened to go out a 1000 miles after the engine swap. It went out while I was just sitting at the light. The car just shook and then I had nothing. I really believe it was the dealers fault and the previous owners fault. The car only had 4000 miles on it when I bought it. And buying new tires really sucks. BUT you know what I will never buy a different car. My next car will be an M3. No matter the amount of problems the service is usually great and I love the car. I love modding the car and just driving it all the time. My friend has an evo and he just got it 4 months ago and he drove my car twice and he has said his next car will be an M3. People that drive the car for 30 mins want it.

just get the M3. All cars have problems, just have to deal with it. You might get lucky and have no problems. Either way its way too much fun to drive.

Mine = '02 M3.

Problems? None other than a leaky power steering hose. Which was replace under warranty. Buy it. Drive it. Love it. You will never go back.

If you don't sissy out and don't rely on dealers and garages work on your car yourself. I mean its my baby I know it best, hasn't been expensive for me in two years at all. But if you just don't know how, I guess dont. If you could buy the car you could definately spare $2000 max a year if its a daily driver

This is REALLY ignorant statement. Show some tack and realize not everyone out there are like you and I. Yes, I work on my own car...but I also offer my abilities to others that don't. Yes, he could certainly save his money. But there are some out there without a lick of mechanical abilities.

Help where you can, IMO. :D

Not that relates to you buying an e46 but i own a 99M3 that has just under 50k miles and it is abused at the track and driven likes it's supost to be driven almost every day in the summer. Aside from regular maitinense such as oil change, fluid changes, brakes, tires from track use, I have had NO mechanical problems. The car performs flawlessly every time and starts up every time.

M3's are great machines and as long as they are treated with care and well maintained you will have no problem. Just make sure you search for a certified and buy one with a warenty. Good luck.

I'm on my third M3 (2005), after owning a 98 and a 2002 w/SMG. I really can't see myself in anything else. I enjoy beating up the street in my Dakota R/T, but I have never been in any car that out-finesses the M3. Supercar performance with daily driver maintenance. I change the oil, throw on an upgrade here and there, and enjoy it without worries.

Yes, I've had the rubber trim issues too, on my 2002 M3, but no such problem on the 2005. The titan shadow interior pieces in the 02 were prone to blistering, but the new aluminum parts in the 05 don't have that problem.

How can you resist this?

Well I'm trying to talk myself into a Praxis suspension. If I can justify that (and who couldn't?) I'll be dropping it then.
