View Full Version : AA Exhaust..Installation Cost?
abg123 12-13-2005, 10:35 PM Hello:
Just bought a new AA Exhaust (just the Back end..muffler) ..shipped up to Long Island. I'm having a local garage who specializes in BMW's perform the installation.
Wondering what I might expect to pay for the install???? Any estimates? AA says about and hour and a half labor ,but was wondering what others might have paid who DIDN'T have it installed @ AA in Miami.
Thanks, Adam

Everyone probably does it themselves. Its about as straightforward as it gets.
NC98///M3 12-14-2005, 02:59 AM Yeah, are you afraid to get your hands dirty? That's one thing I notice about the E46 vs the E36 guys...E36 guys don't mind working on their own cars, E46 guys are deathly afraid to get dirty. If you don't konw how to do something, ask. That's the point of this board, to show you how to do stuff.
abg123 12-14-2005, 10:27 AM OHHHH...this forum is for do-it-yourselfers only?? My Bad!!
This is what I'll do..I'll drag a few jack stands out to 88th and Lexington, grab a few propane heaters (after all..it is 19 degrees today!)...get my tools..drag the 4.5' x 3' box w/ the exhaust...some MORE tools...a few cones, so no one drives my ass over.
EASY!!
Let me tell you something...there a more than a few of us who don't have the time, place, tools, know-how, WHATEVER..to work on their own cars. THE POINT OF THIS FORUM IS TO ASK QUESTIONS....PERIOD.
Contrary to your idiodic post...it's NOT to "show me how to do stuff".
PALELLA 12-14-2005, 10:42 AM OK, seems like noone wants to give you the answer to your question. It should take about 30 minutes to do so getting charged for an hour of work wouldn't seem unfair. I'd say about $85. Book time to swap exhaust on an E46 is 1.4 hours though.

Very nice retort!
Honestly, I installed my own, it took all off an hour. Mostly because I had to beat the sh!t out of a few bolts to get my mid pipe on at the same time. If you take it somewhere, it will cost roughly 50-75 depending on the place; and should not take more than 30-45 min (mind you this is in Texas where the standard of living varies with other states; therefore so do prices). In fact you don't even need to take it to a nice shop. It's a simple bolt on process with no welding. If someone messes up this process...maybe they shouldn't have control of their own lives. (inserted for humor) Good luck with finding a place!
abg123 12-14-2005, 01:46 PM Thank you very much!!
A couple of answers that help!! Now when this guy comes out and tells me it was a 3 hour job, I'll have a better idea what was involved.

Ohhhh right thats why I love California.....
Anyways, its going to cost what its going to cost, regardless what people estimate here, so relax man. I have a feeling it will cost double what people are telling you, since I have never come across an exhaust that fit perfectly the first time its put on the car. A huge part of the time its going to take is going to depend on how competent the installer is.
egyptntree 12-14-2005, 01:57 PM I went to a local muffler shop and he charged me $50. If you go to like a mienekie or muffler man or something they will probably charge the same. All thats under there holding it if I am correct is one bolt and it slips into about 4 rubber hangers. What my guy did was undo the rubber hangers from their bolts and brought it all down and then slipped the new mufflers into the hangers and then just bolted everything back in. It took a whole 30 mins.

Idiotic post? Boy, you need to learn some manners. 19 degrees? Aww boo hoo. I changed out an entire rear SUBFRAME with hand tools and a small $19 dollar jack from autozone in 15 dgeree weather in a tee-shirt and sweatpants over 2 nights in a busy parking lot! Changing out an exhaust is not hard. All you need are some basic sockets, and the correct size open end wrench. No cutting, welding, ect involved. Shouldn't take you moe than 2 hours on a nice sunday afternoon. If you're so worried about being run over drive to a nice open parking lot and do it. This forum is to ask questions AND show you how to do stuff. That's why there are one million (slight exageration) diy threads with pictures, write-ups, ect. Also if you actually read my post and didn't get your panties in a wad, you would see I didn't say this forum is ONLY a diy forum or anything closely relating to that. I said "If you don't konw how to do something, ask. That's the point of this board". Sorry you don't see the forum that way. Good luck with your exhaust install!

bimmerdriver99 12-16-2005, 12:14 PM It should take about No more than 1 hour for a shop to do the install. Remember that It might take some time to let the stock exhaust cool off but they shouldn't charge you for that time, only the time that is spent working on the car. That is were a shop will try to milk you for your money. But yeah no more than an hour.
