View Full Version : Rear Wheel Spacer (details inside)
Dinanify 12-13-2005, 08:25 PM Hey Folks,
Background: I have a 97 m3, GC Coilovers, 6" length 700lb rear springs, -2.5 degrees negative camber, and an eisenmann cat-back, SSR GT2 wheels (17x8.5 44ET), rear fenders are rolled, and 245/40/17 Michelin Pilot Sport Cups....
Problem: At the track on Monday with the above wheels/tires + a small spacer (tirerack, either 3-4mm, thinking 3, but not sure), the edge of the muffler ate at the edge of the tire and chewed it up pretty good :(
Question: With what you guys know, with a 44mm offset wheel from above, do you think I could get a 10mm spacer in the rear w/o reversing the problem to the fender? (having the tire rub on the fender?
Let me know if I can be more clear....
Thanks!
p.s. if yes (can fit a 10mm spacer), let me know if you know someone who has one that they could part with...

You buyin'?
mcclaskz 12-13-2005, 08:46 PM Take a hammer to the muffler.
Dinanify 12-13-2005, 08:49 PM Yeah, that's one option, but I'd prefer not to have to bang the muffler if I don't have to
jayhudson 12-13-2005, 09:03 PM I specifically bought the UUC System U because of the tire clearance. I had mucho rubbage on my factory muff.
I don't think a 10mm spacer will work.

BTDT! i remember taking the bfh to the muffler when i was running a stromung cat-back...good times...

Heh, There I went again, I took something that worked (my old systemU), and messed it up by putting the Eisenmann on (DOH!)
I may end up seeing if I can give myself a little more clearance by means of a slight tap to the muffler or grounding away some of the edge that is still there at that point. A 5mm spacer 'may' fix the problem or get rid of most of it. Going to measure the spacer thats on there tonight to verify for sure.

I had the same exact problem when I ran my stromung. Nothing a few wacks with a BFH didn't cure :buttrock I fixed the problem, by getting rid of the muffler and running headers with 3" straight back. :D

thats just cheating. just remember Ben has to drive his car to the track. and sometimes work :stickoutt

thats what earplugs are for ;)

Exactly, I don't want to compromise the car to make myself more comfortable :) I'll probably eventually do the same thing, but not until I'm trailoring the biotch and free of the smog restrictions...
paintpro21 12-13-2005, 11:17 PM actually the first thing that came to my mind was how much room they usually leave on both sides of a muffler when they are mounted. is it possibly by bending hangers or something, to move the muffler to the right a little? only thing i worry about is that if the hangers on the muffler are bent, that the moutning point won't mount up with the center pipe. which leads to the question of how far are you willing to go with not harming the muffler. becuase a muffler shop might be able to tweak the pipe a bit for you to change the angle.
I know its an eisenmann (the sexiest sounding muffler ever) if it were my car id use the BFH on the thing too.

If your wheels have a 44mm offset and you use a 5mm spacer, you'll net 39mm. My K-1s are 40mm and they're great. My street wheels are 38mm and they'd rub on the outside with the RA-1s on there. Of course, my rubbing is up inside the fender, not on the fender arch. And, my car is an inch lower than yours and has more negative camber.
You'd better rent Tony's fender roller and do some massaging. That thing is awesome.

Dinanify 12-20-2005, 07:38 PM Well, this fitment was okay with the UUC systemU, but the Eisenmann muffler is wider (sigh). I took out my 5lb rubber mallet to see if I could bang the muffler around, but no luck. THe fenders are already rolled.
One night soon, maybe over xmas vacation next week, I'll pull the spacer out of the rear and measure the exact thickness (it's not an H&R back there, it's a tire-rack special).
I can't run on the track again like it is now.
Drew K. 12-20-2005, 07:51 PM You need a bigger hammer, grasshopper... or stop being a girly man and hit the thing.

Either a bigger hammer or I'll have to pull it off of the car to get it done properly...
mlytle 12-20-2005, 07:57 PM rubber mallet? bah!!! you need a 10lb metal sledge...beat on that thang!

Gotcha, I was using the wrong tool, thanks for the info...
sawbones 12-20-2005, 08:55 PM Drop the hangers and bend them a bit to move the muffler away from the tire. You should be able to gain about 1/2 inch of clearance. Then take a big metal hammer and start swinging. Worked for my Stromung.:buttrock
M3 Pete 12-20-2005, 09:07 PM rubber mallets are to AVOID damage. You need to INFLICT some ... a BFH is the only way.
Dinanify 12-20-2005, 09:29 PM Whar about the valence though?

You still should have a bit of room between the tips and valence. Obviously, if you bend the hangers too much, the tips will touch the valence and melt it a bit. Just bend the hangers a bit at a time. IIRC I used a large screwdriver and wedged it between the hanger & muffler to wedge it open on the driver's side hanger and the already mentioned BFH to bang on the passenger side hanger to close it down a bit.
jdholder 12-21-2005, 12:50 AM Whar about the valence though?
The valance will take care of itself by slowly melting away.
