View Full Version : How many subs should I put in my E36?

I got a hold of (3) JL 12' W6s from a friend for pretty cheap in an enclosure out of his GS. I haven't tried fitting the enclosure in my trunk, but I think it'd be overkill to use all 3 in my E36. I was thinking of using just 2 and making an enclosure for it. However a friend of mine said 1 would be enough for my car.

So should I use 1 or 2 of these subs?

Opinions welcome:) TIA

I had 2 12W6s powered by a JL 500/1 amp in my e36. I thought it was wayyy too much bass. Go with one, I think it will be just perfect. I have Stealthboxes now and want a little more, so I'll probably put a W6 in and power it with the rear channels of my 300/4.

FCS, God I love your car.

Anyhow, since you got 3, use em. I'm going with 3 in the near future.

Eric Stevens from Image Dynamics told me about an E36 that sounded really good with 2 subs in the rear of the spare-tire well, it is huge, 3 12's in that well would be incredible

One will be plenty. I have 1 10W6 in my car and it's perfect.

It's pretty personal If you have an SQ bias one should be fine.

Thanks for the compliment Sephiroth:buttrock

Palella, what are you powering it with? I don't have an amp and will be looking for one......

Are they the W6v2s? Me personally, I'd go with 2-3, since they're great SQ subs.

If they were an SQL sub, like say the W7, then 1 would definately be enough.

I am only running one 10" D9 and it is more than enough. I am 99% sure your car is open (can access your subs from backseat) so cars like hatchbacks and suvs are better for SPL. My D9 hit RIDICULOUSY loud, loud enough to hurt my ears, but not matter what you decide, get a good box for it. A well built box will make the WORLD of difference!! I have a snail shell box with specs from Diamond and I will never change this sub. It's ALOT better than my 12" IDMAX

I have 1 10" and it's fine for me. Of course I don't try to make my ears bleed or anything. If that's what you're going for then make all 3 of them fit and take pictures!

I've also got 1 10" Infinity Kappa powered by JL 500/1 (I know, overkill...) and it sounds great. I don't need gangsta bass that can be heard 5 blocks down the street.

One 12" should be good. Just get a good box for it. Oh, and if you'd like to pass one of the other 12"s on to me, that's fine, too. :D

I can tell you from personal experience 3 will suck. those subs are about 15-20 lbs each, figuring 3 of them plus box will be a lot of weight to ad to an m3. my 2 subs/box was right around 100 lbs and made a big difference in every aspect of driving. i am downgrading to 1 10, which i put in a prefab box just to test,. and was still plenty loud. as a rule of thumb they say every time you double the cone area of a set up, you only gain 3 db's. so going with 2 12w6's will be plenty, and personally, i would only go with 1
