Gray Bishop 12-12-2005, 01:38 AM dude, see if you can get your hands on it lol exmaxima1 12-12-2005, 09:20 AM what is this new lightweight enclosure material that both Alumapro and BSW are saying they have which both advertise saving the same amount of weight? It's not just a material, but a COMPOSITE of materials to achieve a weight savings. Basically it's a sandwich of rigid skins with a low-mass core all bonded together. Similar to the concept of composite speaker cones, except on a larger scale. If you understand constrained layer construction, and that stiffness is a cube function of thickness (something twice as thick has 8 times the stiffness), you can appreciate that a low-mass composite can have the strength of a high mass material. But the composite is much lighter in weight. Another advantage of the low-mass construction is less stored energy. Conventional MDF panels are high-mass and are difficult to damp. Similar to damping a massive church bell---once you get it ringing, it is tough to stop it. Enclosure panels can have a significant amount of surface area and will compete with the woofer cone in moving air. If the box panels are slow to stop motion due to their stored energy, they will smear the the bass tones. But a low-mass enclosure stop moving quickly, and sounds much more dynamic and musical. Matthew neocloud 12-12-2005, 10:29 AM ok where do you get this stuff? Do they sell it in sheets? I never buy boxes, I make them myself! JPWheelr 12-12-2005, 01:33 PM can y ou work with composites? If so, I can get you sheets relatively cheap (about the same price as MDF) Shipping is a whole nother story. I found one supplier (here in Saint Louis of all places) and you need a business license to buy from them (no sale to public). Cuts with a box cutter, resins up great. Really like the stuff. NidaCore if you want to try and find it online. Gray Bishop 12-13-2005, 06:43 AM NidaCore if you want to try and find it online. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gray Bishop 12-13-2005, 04:30 PM Nida Core was VERY HELPFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for anyone interested the material used for car audio enclosures is the "h8PP" line JPWheelr 12-13-2005, 04:38 PM telling you my trade secrets. You owe me a chunk of your first million. Or I could be your supplier of it... exmaxima1 12-13-2005, 05:44 PM for anyone interested the material used for car audio enclosures is the "h8PP" line But I know for a fact that it is not used in the Alumapro or BSW enclosures. H8PP is a plastic (recycled milk bottles?) honeycomb and the Alumapro/BSW enclosures do not use honeycomb composites. Matthew morganbressler 12-13-2005, 05:51 PM This has been around for quite some time in PA speaker CAbs. I have Celestion Road series cabs that weigh almost nothing, and soudn WAY better then wood cabs of hte like. I recomend it if it is the same concept. Feels very solid, and weighs nothing. Gray Bishop 12-14-2005, 01:56 AM you guys and your secrets, lol like I'm really going to steal your trade secrets and Donald Trump you out of a fortune, HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just want a lightweight enclosure JPWheelr 12-14-2005, 11:30 AM (from the other thread) no, it isn't expensive at all, about the price of MDF. DO NOT GET 3/4" thickness! (what's the point) get 1/4" or 1/2"! Remember this is fiberglass, not wood! |
