View Full Version : Don't try to buy a Drive+Play from Circuit City.
Speedlimits? 12-11-2005, 05:40 PM I decided that I like the Harmon Kardon iPod Drive+Play system and I would use it to further incorporate my iPod into my car. Well I go to CC which was the only retailer in my area according to HK's website to buy the Drive+Play system. I look at it and decide to buy it and the guy goes and gets the box to ring it up. 370 BUCKS! WTF! it is suppose to be 200.
"Oh we dont sell this product without installation, too many people return it."
That is fucking bullshit, I don't want CC employees digging around in my car. I guess I will just have to order it, but I wanted to get it done tomorrow when I had my car in the shop doing a few things.
Sephiroth619 12-11-2005, 07:07 PM What asshats.
99Blk&Tan 12-11-2005, 08:06 PM Buy it online. Crutchfield and Bavauto have it.

hksimpson 12-11-2005, 09:23 PM Or use in store pickup at Circuit City-- order and pay for it online and walk up to the front counter and they hand it to you. Price is $199 and you will not hear from anyone in sales about it.
It sounds like you got some "rebel" at CC because I have never heard of them do such a thing. Those things are pretty damn cool.
phillyB///M3 12-11-2005, 09:31 PM Sounds ghey.
MillerTime1nine 12-11-2005, 10:46 PM Yea thats BS
InYoUrDrEaMs 12-11-2005, 10:51 PM Thats bull$***, I work at circuit city (car stereos) and I sell them all the time without installation, it is optional if you want us to install it...Sounds like he was having a bad day....
keeslinger31 12-11-2005, 11:16 PM :bs

BS - I've attempted to buy car audio equippment from CC, they REFUSED to sell it without the cost of labor included.
Speedlimits? 12-12-2005, 02:04 PM They had that price quoted and everything once I found the display. But I might just order online and use instore pickup like someone suggested.
NHenson1 12-12-2005, 03:28 PM i install at CC. the only thing we have mandatory installation for is alarms and remote starts. i think DEI requires professional installation with their stuff. it says it on the boxes.
el.duderino 12-12-2005, 03:30 PM Alpine used to... as a condition for opening CC.
themadhatter 12-12-2005, 04:01 PM maybe I had an isolated incident when trying to purchase a panasonic radio for the wifey's car from the Phillipsburg NJ CC.
---
I bought my Alpine CDA-9855 from BB and had no issues walking out the store with it.
InYoUrDrEaMs 12-12-2005, 05:38 PM At the circuit city I work at there is no mandatory installation here in Ocala,FL. It doesnt matter if you want an alarm, subs, satelite radio, gps, remote start, we dont care...If you would have come to my store I would have sold it to you for 199.99....Out the door u go....
hksimpson 12-13-2005, 03:02 AM I went to Circuit City today and asked two sales people and an installer about this and none of them had ever heard about making someone pay for an install on it, even if they carried it out of the store.
This makes me believe we are talking about an isolated case or a store with its own agenda or a salesperson that was not well informed. It is not like most of the people at my CC are old enough to legally drink, so this stuff is bound to happen.
Since there is at least one proven way to get it at CC -- order it online and pick it up in the front of the store, we should move on to more important stuff like getting a double-din unit with video in our E36.
Speedlimits? 12-13-2005, 03:27 AM i just went to a local car audio shop and gave them my business.

Good for you! i always try and support the local guy when possible.
You should send a letter to Circuit City and tell them what happened. The results should be interesting.
awahl63 12-13-2005, 10:27 AM what asshats

I would support my local guys, but in my area the two local guys make Circuit City look like angels. They are great if you want to pay retail plus 20% and not get a firm install estimate or get the line, "we don't have it, but we can order it."
If you send a letter it will probably end up in India where they handle all of their calls. I found this out when I had a problem with them once.
Adil R 12-14-2005, 12:52 AM i sell car stereo at ccity as well, and we offer installation on it, at a price of 95 dollars, its not required that we install anything you purchase, sorry for your bad experience and i hope you dont think badly of all the stores and their associates. although i understand the i dont trust shops with my car, my shop has been very well trusted and works on porsches, vipers, BMW's and many many classic cars. we are told we do better work than the custom shops in our area, but then again that depends on the installers and how much they know and care about their job, my installers for them car audio is their life and they have 8+ years of experience each.
Adil R 12-14-2005, 12:54 AM i install at CC. the only thing we have mandatory installation for is alarms and remote starts. i think DEI requires professional installation with their stuff. it says it on the boxes.
yes sorry i forgot to mention that part, DEI does require professional install, which is included in the price of the units, additional parts like remote start interfaces are extra. but to get their life time warranty it must be installed by us, and the majority of people would be overwelmed with the install anyway.
Nick77 12-14-2005, 01:28 AM Yeah i work at circuit city also, and this sounds like an isolated store as well. we have the hk drive+play system but sell it for $200 and do not require you to have it installed.
