Ced - I always thought "exit" speed from a corner is more important than straightaway speed. IF I can exit 5-10 mph faster -- wouldn't your straight away speed be even faster than someone early apexing a corner?
Isn't that book assuming a car has a lot of power? I mean, I would think a miata that carries more speed out of the corner would be faster at the end of a straight than a miata that has a slower exit speed from the corner.
This almost seems completely contrary to what I've been taught. One should work on the exit speed in corners vs. trying to maximize straightaway speed

better exit speed give you better straight away speeds. The key words of all of this is speed secret #20: The most important corner is the one leading to a straight away. Later apexes are for those type corners. There are basically 3 types of corners.
