My BIL recently bought a '99 600SL. He's been after me about a race for a couple of months. I wanted to wait until my engine was broken in after it's rebuild. Well the time came, my engine has 5k miles on it and I was in Bakersfield:( for Thanksgiving. I asked if he would like to go for a ride before we raced and he agreeed. After a few spirtited take offs on some rural farm roads he said he didn't want to race anymore. I tried to convince to race him seeing as he has 420 lbs. of torque but he was a no-go:stickoutt . The real funny part was when we got home his wife even asked how it went and he told her he needed to do a little modding before we raced. He spent the next couple of hours online looking for chips and exhaust. This was a mental kill not a physical kill. I'm prety sure he would own me on a 80mph roll though.

What'd that built M5 make on the dyno??

No dyno numbers yet. I'm having a little trouble finding the right chip for my engine. I could try out a dyno run on the stock chip. All other chips I've tried cause too much detonation. I went with sock compression too.

Yeah, I've driven the absolute HELL out of a 96 SL600. That was the 2nd quickest car I have ever driven, and the first fastest car I have ever driven. I took it near the limiter with ease. 389hp and 420lb-ft is very fun. Too bad the cars weigh so much!

Greg, thanks for the information. I'm just curious, if you didn't raise the compression or throw a blower or turbo on that thing, why go with aftermarket internals?

I had planned on going with oem .040 over pistons. When my mechanic tore the engine down we found that the previous owner had bored it out to .050 over. We went another .010 over to .060 over. We had to buy custom pistons for that bore size. All my valves were pretty burnt. The Ferrea SS valves were only $5 more per valve than oem, it seemed like a no-brainer to upgrade. The rest of the work was to get the most out of what I had done.

Hes playing it smart, first he attacked him mentally, so when the race happens hell choke.

Nice kill! Carry the big stick, and you probably won't have to use it. :stickoutt

I love the use of words like "internals." So import scene.

Mark B's 3.8(?) supposedly dyno'd 322rwhp. However, that was the engine builders claim and he hasn't had an independent shop do it yet. Since stockers do between 265-280hp and he has more displacement, cams, 3.8 throttle bodies, track pipe and custom ECU that seems plausible.

BTW, I have ran my buddy's '95 S600 a few times from 60mph+ and he pulls like crazy. He has only opened up the intakes a bit.

haha mental kill... very nice. Can't wait to see some numbers from that M. I'd also love to hear your brother-in-law's 600 if he does the exhaust/chip/intake hah.

I will be happy with 290+ to the wheels. My pre-rebuid dyno was only 253rwhp. I drove my car 1700 miles in the last week and I used less than 1/2 qrt. of oil, yeah. The drive included a stop in Las Vegas so there was some sustained high speeds out in the desert. We still need to get our little Bay Area group together.

Those 600 are fast for 4500lbs. Are you sure you can beat him 0-100 or 0-130?
