Does anyone know what the cost would be in removing the head on a 90 M3. Is it labor intensive ? My friend has a small oil leak on the head gasket and wants to have it fixed. His car has 65k miles.

S14s leak. Live with it unless it really is a problem.

I would guess book rate is probably 10 hours to get everything done. So depending on the shop labor rate your are looking at $750-1250 plus parts (headgasket $200+ plus any other throwaway parts they want to charge for).

I've done it enough- last time I got the head off in 2.5 hours. I could probably do the whole job in 6.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the leak is very small so it may be best to leave it alone. But why do these S14's leak ? Is it because it is a racing designed engine?

engine in my experience. I'd say that b/c e30 m3s get flogged more than other cars, they're more likely to leak. Just a theory. Since you are in the bay area, check out Bill Arnold BMW Repair in San Rafael. He is the e30 m3 repair god, and his prices are very fair for labor. I know it is a haul from Castro Valley to Marin, but he is the best.

He is a BMW god period. I got to witness his Bavaria this year at Targa Newfoundland, I was so glad he wasn't in our class!

He has decided not to fix the oil leak, it's too expensive and not woth tearing apart the engine.
