View Full Version : Anyone here w/ extensive e46 m3 exhaust mods?
FL410 11-24-2005, 12:31 AM I've been doing some research into a full-tilt exhaust mod on my '02 SMG M3. Was wondering if anyone here has done it and what their experience has been. Here's what I got in mind:
Evosport or Supersprint headers
Larini sport cats
Eisenmann or Supersprint section 2 pipe
Larini Club Sport exhaust
Conforti software for the above mods
Research suggests it is good for an honest 20hp and 30tq :redspot . It's about the only legit way to get power out of the e46 M3 other than SC'ing it, which I don't want to do cuz I don't think it fits the M philosophy of NA tuning and I'm worried about heat and already high stock compression ratio and the associated warranty implications.
So anyway, if you've done similar mods or are thinking about it let me know.

MCoupe434 11-24-2005, 04:34 AM I would suggest staying away from the SS headers. Alot of ppl on the m3forum and e46fanatics boards have been having alot of problems. As far as everything else goes, sounds good. Can't wait to hear it.

FL410 11-24-2005, 09:45 AM Hey, Nick. Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I think SS had some problems with their early headers that I read about. I'm beginning to lean toward the Evosport ones which have the added benefit of ceramic coating to keep heat out of the engine bay. I think it is similar to a JetHot coating. They are running a special on them right now, too. Bavarian Hyper Sports has some, too, but most have been going with SS or Evosport it seems.
I'll let you guys know how it goes. I think I'll be ordering it soon. Any suggestions on where to get it all installed? Right now I'm thinking of going to Performing Imports.

scorch268 11-24-2005, 10:59 AM Believe it or not, I have heard good things about the ebay headers (380$).
Best of luck w/ the installs!
Fyi; I flew to KHOU and back yesterday in the bonanza, 50 knot tailwind, lean of peak at 200knots burning 10gph. Hows that for a cheap flight? :)

Yeah, Evosport sounds like yuor best bet. Let me know how much the entire setup ends up costing you (excluding labor). As is turns out I'm sticking w/ my M :alright and this sounds like a good setup.

M Junkie 11-24-2005, 05:40 PM what i plan on doing after i finish my dinan s3 project, is top it all off with some bmw oem euro headers, larini gt sport cats, eisenmann section 2 and of course my dinan exhaust. then that should do it.

No WAY I'm putting Ebay headers on the M! She deserves the best!
Hey, Chandler, do you have GAMI injectors on the Bonanza? I had them and a GEM monitor on our Baron and it was a dream setup. Only burned like 12.5-13gph per side. It really helps with keeping the top end clean and strong, too. Only lost one cylinder in over 500 hours of flying. BTW, flew w/ Ryan Orr yesterday and he said hi.

Are you doing the Dinan/JRZ shocks? What else? Engine mods too? IMO their susp. is great but the engine mods are WAY overpriced. But if you got the dough go for it. I'm deciding between the JRZ and a TC Kline setup. Have heard extremely good things about TC Kline lately and they're cheaper.
BTW I'd forgo the Euro OEM headers. The Supersprint, Evosport, or BHS headers are better built and flow better. Also the prices have come down to just $100 over the Euro OEM ones so it's a no brainer IMO.

no, im going with the koni adjsutables, i dont really see a point in paying an extra grand for something a little more rigid. im doing everything in the s3, enentually the s/c too, and the intercooler when it comes out. i wouldnt say way overpriced, and this is why. first and foremost, i had an e36 m3 dinan s2 and not once did i ever have 1 single prob. in 4 years. to me thats worth an extra penny, also at the end ill have a set up that works perfect all together. if anything goes wrong, its all covered(as long as i dont do anything other than dinan stuff). when i get the supercharger not only will dinan have a warranty for the s/c, but if the engine goes boom they cover that too. NO OTHER CO. will do the same. they match the factory warranty.
I've heard a car with the exact exhaust setup as i described and its remarkable.

Haha, Ive read all the info on the headers from ebay, people have had them x-rayed, stress tested for several thousand miles, and had the welds professionally inspected, all checked out fine, in fact, better than the supersprint ones. But to each his own.
Regarding the bonanza, I have a gami injectors (which are fantastic), w/ a shadin fuel flow monitor and a GEM system engine monitor. I usually run LOP, w/ cylinder head temps lower than 315F each. Ryan is a good guy, I worked at EPPS flight school when I was in Highschool where I met him. He's always been really cool.
With the baron, are you talking about whiskey mike? Pat's baron? If so, I love that plane.
Josh at Eurosport had the EURO headers on his E46 M3 might want to give him a call and see what he thinks.

FL410 11-24-2005, 07:19 PM With the baron, are you talking about whiskey mike? Pat's baron? If so, I love that plane.
No, my Dad had a Baron for five years 'til we sold it in April. I've also owned a couple A36s over the years. Fantastic airplanes. My uncle was a Beech engineer for 36 years. I kinda miss flying them once in a while.
Pat's Baron, 74WM, was sold about two years ago to the COO of Nortel. He's got it back on the market now. Lucky SOB also bought himself a beautiful Beaver on floats which he's also sold now.
FL410 11-24-2005, 07:40 PM Hey, Chuck, that sounds sweet! Wasn't knocking Dinan per se just think you can do as good or better for less $. There is no doubt that they have done their homework and that all the parts play together well. Like I said I'm trying to decide between Dinan/JRZ and TC Kline susp. myself. I didn't know you were gonna do the Dinan SC kit, too! No doubt if I went SC (am not currently) it'd be a Dinan for the warranty. There is just too much at risk on that serious an engine mod. As for some of the smaller mods like susp. there is way less risk. I also don't like their exhaust because it has the fake pipes on the driver side. The engineering is sound but I just don't like that fact. The Larini Club sport gets around the same challenges the Dinan does and still uses all four pipes--sounds great, too. But to each his own.
BTW I saw on cardomain you're looking to use CSL rims. Do you plan to use OEM ones of Turner's site or something? May I suggest a better alternative:
http://www.racmonolites.com
Their RG4 is a true forged wheel made by Champion Motorsport in a 19x9 front and 19x10 rear. It looks a lot like the CSL rim. They are beautiful, strong and lightweight (20-21#). Of course, they are also more $$ than OEM CSL.
Good luck with the Dinan S3 susp. I'd love a ride after you get it.

sorry if i gave off the immpression of being offended by your comment. i wasnt, but perhaps i was still in dinan defensive mode since so many people flame them. i have heard a lot about the tc kline coilovers. aparantly they are good stuff. ive seen some pics and the drop you can get is amazing let alone the performance you get.
i kinda agree on the exhaust a little.....it does look kinda wack in the cold. but the engineering is there so i cant complain (especially since i bought it already)
for the rims, i'll be going to butler tire who sells the oem zcp rims. i imagine geordie or craig will hook a brother up with a good deal(hint hint wink wink).
anyway i'm having the suspension installed on monday so if there is a meeting anytime afterwards id be glad to give you a ride to check them out.
btw, what part of atlanta are you in?

I live in Buckhood right by all the bars. Which reminds me we should have a GA BF drinking meet (w/o a drive afterward of course--take a cab)
Can't wait to hear your comments on the susp.

FL410 11-25-2005, 07:36 AM Chuck,
Who is doing the susp. install? PI or Global?
Here is something else about Dinan I can't figure out. Why do they not change out the US header/cats for Euro or some aftermarket setup? Is it because of the warranty issue, emissions, or what? Even with their SC kit I think they retain the US setup which seems crazy to me.

performing imports. i talked with dinan rep the first of this month and he said to make everything work perfect you really need good software when you change out headers. the exhaust gases leave soo much quicker that it heats things up in the engine and software is a neccessity to retard it a bit so the interals dont break. i think thats what he said anyway. after all that + cpu upgrade he said there would not be enough gain to warrant all that work. (now that might just mean its not worth it to them) ive talked to a guy who has all that so i will be curious to see how things are working in a year or 2, and to see if things are still good.
they are however working on cams for the e46 m3 n/a and for their s/c.

Haha, I live about 100 yards from Peachtree Pres. Church. small world. Lets do have a meet (and walk home after)
FL410 11-25-2005, 01:50 PM Yeah, I'm gonna go with Conforti software. Not sure how you'd work it with the Dinan SC installed since they'll have their own software installed to account for the SC. Leads me to believe they'll have to develop a version for the headers/cats too, as no third party is gonna write it for the SC and headers/cats on Dinan's behalf. One option is to go down to Jacksonville where there is a Superchip facility that writes custom software for such cases. But maybe that is too much work AND it would void Dinan's warranty which is the main benefit of going w/ Dinan.

Cool. I live off East Paces and Grandview. We need to think of a good place around here for a meet. Off the cuff I'd say the parking lot over by PetSmart/Sports Authority/Eatzi's at Peachtree and Piedmont. Good size parking lot that's rarely full.
How come you're flying out of RYY and not PDK--hangar space? I used to keep our Baron at LZU because I could never get a suitable hangar at PDK.

Yeah, I'd love to find a buckhead meeting spot. In the past, we've used the starbucks off of Piedmont.
I keep the plane at RYY for several reasons. Hanger space is cheaper, youre not on the ground for 30 min waiting for the active, and its actually easier to jump on 75 north than to deal with traffic in-town. I love PDK, and have flown into mercury, taken their shuttle to marta, ridden it to buckhead, and walked home :)

Nick,
Here's the cost of what I'm planning:
Evosport headers 1499.00 evosport.com
Larini Sport cats 1995.00 bimmerworld.com
Larini Sec. 2 674.10 bimmerworld.com
Larini Club Sport Exh 1349.00 bimmerworld.com
J. Conforti Shark 469.00 turnermotorsport.com
Total 5986.10 + shipping + install
Not the cheapest mod, but supposedly very effective. Adds about 20whp and 30TQ.

Actually, there are a few companies that do offer the same warranty coverage, we are one.
Agreed, the Euro sounds nice, but no real gains compared to ours or even SS. Ours are dynoing on average at 5-10 more then SS, and SS on our dyno have typically been 5-10 more then Euro. Just FYI!
Thanks

COOL! FYI - our sport cats will be out in Jan for $1499 and be coated with dual metallic 100cpi cats! :)
Also, the software we offer is designed FOR this header, and with the package will be the same price you have for Conforti, so you may want to think about the alternatives!
Please let me know if I can help you! Sounds like you have done a lot of good research!
Thanks

bimmerZ 12-18-2005, 05:19 PM I have heard good things about the Borla exhaust, Turner carries it.
Is the larini exhaust back in stock?
FL410 12-20-2005, 01:20 AM I'm not a Borla fan. Bimmerworld has Larini in stock I think. Larini has a great sound--listen to clip on bimmerworld site.

I do not like the Borla. I have it on my car now (came with the car) and I am not a fan of the sound or the bends. The Magnaflow seems to be a killer suystem for the price though.
Thanks
