So this guy i know just bought one of those new cobalt ss, the supercharged one. Well we were both headed over to my friends house after our class at the local community college was cancelled, and we were speeding around a little. Well we end up next to each other at a red light. Im on my phone and wasn't planning on racing but then he starts revving his engine, so i tell the girl who im talking to to that i gotta race and i toss the phone down on my lap. Well the light turns green right after this and neither of us were ready so we both are rolling about 5 mph and hit it. I try my best to do some sort of a slow rolling launch and get the jump on him. we are side by side until second and we both shift. I spin the tires good into second and we keep going, still side by side. Then comes third gear! I shift! he shifts! then the walking starts :help he pulls me good in third. I would say 2 or so car lenghts and he would have kept it up had we not slowed down. It was a fun race and i knew going into it i would get killed, but it has been a while since i have raced anyone, so i figured it would be fun. I asked him later how many miles were on the car and he said 40. :nono I said i though you were supposed to break it in. and he said he was. I would hate to see how much oil he burns later on in that cars life.:eyecrazy

What mods do you have?

I would hope it's pretty significant, or your friend has never driven a stickshift before. I've driven one, and I guarantee it would have smoked my old E30 325 with me driving both cars (aka equal drivers), by about 2 cars BY 2ND GEAR, much less a 318.

Keep in mind, the car is supercharged and doesn't need to worry about lag, that most 4-cyl FI cars have to deal with.

That engine will be fine as long as he takes care of it. All new engines these days are broken in at the factory. Imagine the liability the companies would face if someone destroys their engine in the first year they have the car. Revving the engine is actually a good thing pecause you want the piston rings to seat and you do not want the cylinder walls to glaze over. Overdoing it by ragging on the car the first 500 miles is not reccomended however. They tell you that you need a break in period because that's the way it's always been. The rest of the car does need a proper break in though, you dont want to be speed shifting, slamming on the brakes, and putting your suspension through major hell. Just drive the normally and it will last a long time.

nice run
how would that cobalt ss supercharged compare to 2001 330i manual?
I know it's just bit faster from 0-100 km/h but I'd say at top speed, 330i would take it

I have manifold back exhaust, a chip and a short shifter, plus a ton of other suspension mods. I got the jump on him and through the end of first to the end of second we were about even. And in third gear he was walking me bad.

I am aware that not all SS's are not supercharged. I ask this because my friend's friend was talking sh*t how my 330i has no chance
But then same guy is talking about his cobalt doing 0-260 km/h in 12 sec and having 260 HP stock!!!!

ok so cobalt ss are not all supercharged.... so i guess thats why in the commercials and ads specify the ss supercharged. is there any way to tell externally if it is or if it isnt? id like to know as i dont think i want any part of that 205+hp supercharged mofo.

I believe any Cobalt wearing an "SS" badge has a supercharged 2.0L

Not true, they have a new SS that has like 171HP or something without the supercharger.

Honestly even with a bad start, its hard to believe a 318 is even close to keeping up with a supercharged one through any gear. They have almost double your HP in a car that is not that much bigger. My guess is he wasn't getting on it all the way.

What is done to your 318is? I raced one, they are slow off the line but decent mid range. I had a tough time putting a car length on one by 90.

I wouldn't call 205 hp almost double that of a stock m42 let alone a lightly modded one. Not much bigger? ~2800# for the cobalt vs. ~2500# for me.
I know he was on it all the way too. I talked to him after the race.

To whoever was asking about racing a 330ci vs cobalt ss. It will be very close. You need to launch on him, the front wheel drive kills that car off the line. Someone in my town has one and we have raced several times, and ever time i take him off the launch. AFter the launch though it seems like i wasnt pulling on him. We raced up until 90 and i was a car length ahead most of the time, i think as speeds were to increase i would pull a little bit, but its a quick car. I have a 330zhp 6 speed. As long as u can launch and not screw up shifting you will be fine and beat him.
